This week’s best premieres stretched from New York to Los Angeles, with stops at NYFF and the Academy Museum.
This week’s best premieres made for one of the busiest stretches on the fall calendar. Anne Hathaway capped a huge year in New York, Florence Pugh brought a Steinbeck epic to the Paris Theater, Tom Cruise unveiled his boldest swing in decades in Los Angeles and the New York Film Festival kept the red carpets rolling all week.
Here are the events worth seeing from September 25 through October 3, from movie premieres and festival screenings to awards dinners, museum openings, brand parties and a tour kickoff.
This Week’s Best Premieres:
‘Verity’ Premiere in New York
Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett and Ismael Cruz Cordova brought Verity to New York on September 29. Michael Showalter’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling thriller casts Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling novelist hired to finish the books of Hathaway’s Verity Crawford, a famous author left paralyzed after a car accident, with Hartnett as Verity’s husband, Jeremy.
For Hathaway, the premiere capped a remarkable year that already included The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The film went on to open at No. 1 this weekend with an estimated $33 million, the same weekend Johnson hosted Saturday Night Live. See our full Verity premiere photos and read our review.
‘East of Eden’ Premiere in New York
Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist and creator Zoe Kazan premiered Netflix’s East of Eden at the Paris Theater on September 30, with the after-party next door at The Plaza. Cast members Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciaran Hinds and Martha Plimpton joined them, along with guests including Paul Dano, Aubrey Plaza and Carrie Coon.
The seven-episode limited series adapts John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, with Pugh as Cathy Ames, Abbott as Adam Trask and Faist as his brother, Charles. It carries a family legacy: Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film starring James Dean. The series is now streaming.
‘Digger’ Premiere in Los Angeles

Tom Cruise and Emma D’Arcy debuted Digger in Los Angeles on September 28. Alejandro G. Inarritu‘s apocalyptic satire casts Cruise, nearly unrecognizable under prosthetics, as Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon whose Arctic drilling sets off a global catastrophe, with Riz Ahmed, John Goodman and Sandra Huller in the ensemble.
The film opened October 2 to about $7.5 million, the lowest debut for a Cruise film since 2007’s Lions for Lambs, after splitting critics down the middle. Warner Bros. is still positioning it as an awards contender. We called it the wildest performance of Cruise’s career.
‘Animals’ Premiere in Los Angeles

Ben Affleck directed and stars in Animals, and he walked the carpet in Los Angeles on October 1 with Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz and Luis Gerardo Mendez. Matt Damon, Affleck’s longtime friend and collaborator, also turned out.
The R-rated kidnapping thriller is Affleck’s next Netflix project after The Rip, his earlier Netflix film with Damon. Animals arrives on the streamer on October 9.
‘Carrie’ Premiere in New York

Mike Flanagan threw a prom-themed New York premiere for Carrie on September 28, a fitting choice for the most famous prom in horror history. Summer H. Howell, who plays the title role, was joined by Matthew Lillard, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Amber Midthunder, Josie Totah, Alison Thornton, Arthur Conti and Joel Oulette.
Flanagan, the filmmaker behind The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, expands Stephen King’s first novel into a full series. Carrie premieres on Prime Video on October 7.
‘Paper Tiger’ Opens the New York Film Festival
Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Miles Teller and director James Gray kicked off the 64th New York Film Festival with Paper Tiger on September 25. The film, which premiered in competition at Cannes, is a Queens family drama that turns into a Russian mob thriller, with Driver as a charismatic uncle and Johansson and Teller as the parents caught in the middle.
Neon opens it in limited release on November 13 before expanding November 20. We called it Gray’s best film yet.
‘A Long Winter’ at the New York Film Festival
Fred Hechinger, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Caitriona Balfe, Kit Connor, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo brought A Long Winter to NYFF on September 27. The film is the latest from Andrew Haigh, whose All of Us Strangers was one of the most acclaimed films of 2023.
A Long Winter has been on a long festival run this fall, playing Telluride and Toronto before New York, and it has quietly emerged as one of the season’s best-reviewed dramas.
‘Possible Love’ at the New York Film Festival
Lee Chang-dong presesnted Possible Love at NYFF on September 27, joined by Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Cho Yeo-jeong and Zo In-sung. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at Venice and is South Korea’s official submission for the Oscar for international feature.
It is Lee’s first feature since Burning in 2018, and it reunites him with Jeon, who won best actress at Cannes for his Secret Sunshine in 2007. Netflix is releasing the film.
‘You Can See Everything’ at the New York Film Festival
Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim screened You Can See Everything at NYFF on September 30. The A24 documentary takes on Elizabeth Holmes, the Theranos founder whose collapse became one of the defining corporate scandals of the century.
It was a big week for Oppenheim, who also directed Primetime, the Robert Pattinson film now in its second weekend in theaters. The documentary premiered at Telluride earlier this fall.
‘Misty Green’ at the New York Film Festival

Rosalind Eleazar, Daniel Kaluuya, Chris Rock, Topher Grace and Amy Landecker celebrated Misty Green at NYFF on October 3. The A24 drama has followed a strong run at Toronto, where Eleazar’s lead performance became one of the breakout stories of the fall.
Eleazar is now firmly in the conversation for the lead actress races. Her work in the film is our pick for the performance of the year.
‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ at the New York Film Festival
Director Takashi Yamazaki brought Godzilla Minus Zero to NYFF on October 3 alongside stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe and Kazuaki Kishida, all returning from the previous film.
The sequel follows Godzilla Minus One, which became a surprise global hit in 2023 and won the Oscar for best visual effects, a first for the franchise. GKids is handling the release, and the new film is already being discussed as a contender in the non-English and box office races at the Golden Globes.
‘Naza’ at the New York Film Festival
Filmmakers Rachel Szor and Yuval Abraham discussed their film Naza at NYFF on October 3. The two previously co-directed the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land.
‘Elsinore’ Screening in Los Angeles

Andrew Scott stopped by a special Los Angeles screening of Elsinore on September 30. Scott plays Ian Charleson, the Chariots of Fire star who performed Hamlet at the National Theatre in 1989 while secretly dying of AIDS, in Simon Stone’s drama co-starring Olivia Colman.
The film won the International People’s Choice Award at TIFF, and Scott is one of the frontrunners in this year’s Best Actor race. Focus Features opens it November 20.

Chris Pratt and Jon Favreau turned out for Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige as he was named Pioneer of the Year by the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation at the Beverly Hilton on September 30. The foundation supports entertainment industry workers in need, and the evening raised $1.9 million.
Favreau, who directed Iron Man, praised Feige for giving career-defining opportunities to filmmakers without long resumes. Pratt credited him with seeing a future Star-Lord when few others did. Feige, for his part, said he got into the business because he loves movies and was “the audience” long before he understood how they were made.
‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ 20th Anniversary at the Academy Museum

Guillermo del Toro marked 20 years of Pan’s Labyrinth with an anniversary screening and reception at the Academy Museum on October 1, presented with Patron Tequila.
The 2006 dark fairy tale, set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, won three Oscars, for cinematography, art direction and makeup, and remains one of the most beloved fantasy films of the century. Del Toro later won best picture and best director for The Shape of Water.
