‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Scores Biggest First Week in Box Office History

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is now the fastest film ever to a half-billion domestically, toppling ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at nearly every turn.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has set the record for the biggest first week in box office history. Sony Pictures confirmed Thursday that Destin Daniel Cretton’s film crossed $500 million in North America in seven days. That makes it the fastest film ever to reach half a billion domestically.

It broke a record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which needed eight days to hit the same mark in 2019. The milestone caps a week of records for the Marvel and Sony release.

‘Brand New Day’ has also claimed the biggest domestic opening weekend in history, with $360 million. It edged past ‘Endgame’ and its $357.1 million debut. ‘Endgame’ still holds the worldwide opening record, set by its $1.2 billion global launch. Along the way, ‘Brand New Day’ posted the biggest domestic Thursday previews and the top Friday number on record, and delivered Sony its best-ever opening weekend.

Globally, the film reached $1 billion in six days. That is the second-fastest ever, behind only ‘Endgame.’

The movie carries a reported $225 million production budget. It comes from Marvel Studios and producer Amy Pascal. Cretton, who directed ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ also directs here.

Sony chief Tom Rothman credited the film’s stars. “They’re not popular because they’re popular,” he told The Hollywood Reporter of Tom Holland and Zendaya. “They’re popular because they’re talented, and they deserve their popularity.” He added that both are “lovely, decent, grounded, good-valued people” who “work really hard.”

The film follows Marvel’s signature hero through a lonely stretch without his loved ones before an invisible enemy tracks him down. Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo also star.

Sony expects the film to keep drawing audiences as summer winds down. Its second weekend will face new wide releases including ‘One Night Only,’ ‘Super Troopers 3’ and ‘Ice Cream Man.’
