New Netflix stills put Pitt in a derby car and on a tennis court with Elizabeth Debicki ahead of a two-week IMAX run Nov. 25.

Netflix is selling David Fincher‘s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth as an action movie, and the new stills back it up. Brad Pitt‘s stuntman is back behind the wheel, this time in goggles on a dirt-track derby car, as Netflix counts down to a two-week global IMAX run starting Nov. 25 and a streaming debut on Dec. 23.

What the Stills Show

The new images put Pitt in the derby car, at a bar with Elizabeth Debicki and on a tennis court with Debicki, Scott Caan and Carla Gugino. The movie is set in 1977, eight years after the Manson-family showdown that ended Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with Cliff working in a Hollywood that has moved on without him. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian round out the cast. Debicki, Gugino and Abdul-Mateen were all on the carpet at Saturday’s Academy Museum Gala.

Quentin Tarantino wrote the script but handed it to Fincher, saying he did not want his final film as director to be a sequel. That final film is still waiting. Tarantino just told Graham Norton he has finished the script for his 10th movie but is in no hurry to shoot it.

Pitt and Fincher, Round Four

This is Pitt’s fourth film with Fincher after Se7en, Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and his first since 2008. For Fincher it is another Netflix feature after Mank and The Killer, and Pitt and Cean Chaffin produce.

The original is a tough act to follow. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood grossed $377 million worldwide and won two Oscars from 10 nominations, including Pitt’s first acting Oscar, for playing this same character. It is also why Pitt is one of the contenders nobody has seen yet in our best actor race breakdown, and why these stills will be studied closely.

The IMAX Window

The release plan is the more interesting business story. Netflix rarely gives its films real theatrical runs, but two weeks in IMAX over Thanksgiving gives Cliff Booth a big-screen event, awards eligibility and a month of word of mouth before it lands on the service two days before Christmas. If the IMAX numbers come in strong, it strengthens the case for Netflix doing this more often, which theater owners have been asking for since the streamer started making movies at this scale.
