Charlize Theron, Colman Domingo and John Carpenter were honored as more than 140 stars, and plenty of Oscar hopefuls, filled the Los Angeles museum.
Taylor Swift performed, Charlize Theron, Colman Domingo and John Carpenter took home honors, and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures walked away with more than $14 million on Saturday night in Los Angeles. The sixth annual Academy Museum Gala, presented by Rolex, drew more than 140 arrivals to the Wilshire Boulevard museum, and a surprising number of them came with an awards campaign attached.
Honors and Dollars
Theron received the Icon Award, Domingo the Vantage Award and Carpenter, the horror director behind Halloween and The Thing, the Luminary Award. The gala was co-chaired by Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, and Tom Ford, with a host committee that included Kate Hudson, Rami Malek, Demi Moore, Greta Lee, Teyana Taylor, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Questlove and Ludwig Goransson.
The $14 million matters more than the headcount. The museum is a nonprofit, and this is its biggest fundraising night of the year. It also lands a month after the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opened across town, which means Los Angeles now has two major film museums competing for the same donors, the same stars and the same Saturday nights. The Academy answered with Taylor Swift.
A Campaign Stop in Black Tie
October galas double as awards season networking, and this carpet read like an early ballot. Andrew Garfield arrived less than two weeks after Neon opened its Oscar push for Artificial at Lincoln Center. Mikey Madison is still on the trail for The Social Reckoning, which we reviewed and which stalled at the box office last weekend.
Amanda Seyfried had the best timing of anyone. She walked the carpet one day after You Can See Everything, the A24 Elizabeth Holmes documentary in which she plays herself and Holmes, posted one of the best documentary openings ever. Jacob Elordi, Chase Infiniti, Rhea Seehorn, Sacha Baron Cohen and Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo of Los Javis rounded out the contenders, while Domingo, one of our best dressed at the Emmys last month, picked up hardware of his own.
The Rest of the Room
Fashion carried the rest. Sabrina Carpenter, Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Rose, Ana de Armas, Demi Moore and stylist Law Roach all walked, along with Pamela Anderson, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dakota and Elle Fanning. Spielberg and Ford hosted a room that also included Kylie Minogue, Conan O’Brien, Slash, the Duffer Brothers and Academy CEO Bill Kramer.
