Jeremy Renner’s last run as Mike McLusky brings in David Morse as an FBI agent who could expose everything.
Jeremy Renner‘s run as Mike McLusky ends in January. Paramount+ will premiere the fifth and final season of Mayor of Kingstown on Jan. 15, and the first look adds a new problem for the man who keeps a Michigan prison town from tearing itself apart: a federal agent played by David Morse.
The final season opens “in the wake of Tracy’s murder and the vengeance visited upon Callahan” by Mike and his brother Kyle (Taylor Handley), per the logline. Morse’s FBI agent Russell Hardy rolls into Kingstown hunting for the missing Callahan, and as a lawman who cannot be bought, he threatens to expose everything Mike has buried.
Morse is an inspired addition. The Emmy nominee has spent decades playing men on both sides of the badge, and pairing him with Renner gives the last run a real antagonist rather than another crime boss. Edie Falco returns as Nina Hobbs, alongside Laura Benanti, Hugh Dillon, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, Necar Zadegan, Nichole Galicia and Lennie James.
Renner’s Comeback Show

Mayor of Kingstown is the series that carried Renner back after his near-fatal snowplow accident on New Year’s Day 2023, when he suffered more than 30 broken bones. His return to set for season three was one of the most remarkable recoveries in recent TV, and ending the show on its own terms, with a final season announced in advance, is a better send-off than most streaming dramas get.
The End of a Sheridan Era
The finale also lands as Taylor Sheridan‘s Paramount universe starts to wind down. Sheridan, who co-created the series with Dillon and directed its pilot, has signed with NBCUniversal for his future work once his Paramount deal runs out. Shows like Lioness, which we reviewed in August, have been the backbone of Paramount+ for years, and losing them will test how much of the service’s subscriber base was really a Sheridan fan club. It is the kind of question we raised in our open letter to David Ellison.
Dave Erickson is showrunner. Paramount Television Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions produce, with Antoine Fuqua among the executive producers.
