Nobody Invited Anthony Ippolito to Audition for ‘I Play Rocky.’ He Auditioned Anyway.

Amazon MGM planned a worldwide casting search to find its young Sylvester Stallone. A tape shot in a grandmother’s basement ended it before it started.

Fifty years ago, a little-known actor wrote himself a script and refused to let anyone else play the lead. Producers wanted a bigger name for Rocky Balboa. Sylvester Stallone said no. Rocky opened over Thanksgiving 1976, earned 10 Oscar nominations, and won Best Picture. Moreover it seems art is imitating life…imitating art once again with Anthony Ippolito and the tale of how he landed the role in ‘I Play Rocky.’

I Play Rocky tells that story, and the way its lead actor got cast is almost too neat to be true. Amazon MGM had a plan in place to find its young Stallone. Director Peter Farrelly has said the production intended to run a worldwide casting search, the kind of exhaustive process a role like this normally demands.

That search never got off the ground. Anthony Ippolito heard the film was in development, got hold of the script, and did the work before anyone asked him to.

The Tape

Ippolito shot three scenes by himself in his grandmother’s basement and sent in the tape. Nobody had requested it. “I looked at it and was like, the search is over, that’s the guy,” Farrelly recalled at the film’s premiere, crediting casting director Rick Montgomery with already having the answer in hand.

The parallel between the story on screen and the story behind it is hard to miss. The film is about a man who refused to wait for permission. Its lead got the job by doing exactly that.

The Premiere

I Play Rocky world premiered at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, and the screening was interrupted repeatedly by cheers and applause, particularly during faithful recreations of scenes from the 1976 original. Farrelly called Peter Gamble’s script the best he had ever read.

Ippolito was visibly affected by the reception. “It took a lot of effort over two years,” he said. “I’m so grateful so many people were willing to take a chance on me in this situation. The movie shows that it’s not really easy to be an actor sometimes, and this is all surreal.”

The supporting cast carries real weight. Stephan James plays Carl Weathers, the actor who went toe to toe with Stallone as Apollo Creed. Tracy Letts has a scene-stealing turn as a fictionalized studio head who keeps throwing roadblocks in the way of getting Rocky made.

The Awards Question

Toronto has already voted once. When the festival announced its awards on Sunday, I Play Rocky finished first runner-up for the People’s Choice Award, behind only La Bola Negra. That result matters more than a loud premiere, because the People’s Choice is the most predictive audience prize in film.

Farrelly knows the math personally. He brought Green Book to this festival in 2018, won the People’s Choice Award outright, and went on to win Best Picture. I Play Rocky came one slot short of repeating the first step, and runner-up finishes have their own track record: The Imitation Game, Jojo Rabbit and Belfast all converted Toronto audience heat into Best Picture nominations.

The competition is another matter. This year’s field includes heavyweights across nearly every major category, and Amazon MGM is also pushing a separate Best Picture campaign. A crowd reaction in Toronto is a strong signal, not a guarantee.

Where the Market Stands?

Critics have a similar read, at least at the floor. Prediction markets treat a fresh rating as close to certain, and a comfortably positive critical consensus as the overwhelming favorite. The real question is the ceiling. Traders price a mid-70s score as more likely than not, while the low 80s and above thins out fast, with the loftiest thresholds the clear minority position. That shape describes a film expected to work, with genuine uncertainty about whether it becomes something more than that.

The November 6 release and the first wave of reviews will settle the question, and the line will keep moving until they do.
