Red carpet lovers, it’s your lucky day: the 83rd Venice Film Festival has officially arrived.

This year’s edition of one of the world’s most glamorous red carpets kicked off with a bang. George and Amal Clooney arrived by their customary water taxi, with George set to receive a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement during the festival’s run. Ellen Burstyn received the same honor at 93, appearing at Venice this year in two projects: Kornél Mundruczó’s Place to Be, alongside Taika Waititi, Pamela Anderson, and Murray Bartlett, and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s short film Flesh Impact, in which Burstyn plays an imagined 100-year-old version of Marilyn Monroe opposite Dakota Johnson’s Monroe at the height of her fame.

Burstyn, who recently suffered a fall, appeared on stage in a vibrant yellow gown to a lengthy standing ovation, calling the honor unlike anything else she’s received. “It’s one thing to win an Oscar, a Tony, or an Emmy, all of which I’ve won,” she said. “But this… it’s a lot.”

A Packed Roster Of Buzzy Premieres

This year’s festival slate has plenty to take in. Martin McDonagh’s Oscar-tipped black comedy Wild Horse Nine leads the pack, alongside Lance Oppenheim’s Primetime, a Robert Pattinson-led portrait of To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, and Florian Zeller’s marital drama Bunker, starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

Expect to see Dakota Johnson, Pamela Anderson, Claire Foy, Susan Sarandon, Kate and Rooney Mara, Orlando Bloom, Stephen Graham, Parker Posey, and Phoebe Bridgers all on the Lido this year.
