He arrives this year as one of the most reliably acclaimed filmmakers in the entire field. The Golden Lion itself, though, has always eluded him. That history gives his candidacy a genuine note of unfinished business, the sense of a filmmaker whose relationship with this specific festival has produced everything except the prize that actually matters most.

The Sentimental Favorite

If any film in this year’s field carries the kind of narrative Venice juries have historically responded to, it is Lee Chang-dong‘s ‘Possible Love’.

It marks the return of one of Korean cinema’s defining figures after eight years away from features. It’s his first film since 2018’s universally acclaimed ‘Burning,’ and his first Venice competition entry in 24 years. When ‘Oasis’ swept the festival with five awards including the Silver Lion for Best Director back in 2002.

The cast alone signals how significant this return is: Jeon Do-yeon, the first Korean actress to win Best Actress at Cannes, alongside Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong of Parasite.

A filmmaker of Lee’s stature coming back after nearly a decade, distributed by Netflix, is precisely the kind of story that can move a jury even when it isn’t the loudest film in the room.

The Veteran First Timer

And then there is Danny Boyle, opening the entire festival with ‘Ink’.

It’s a drama chronicling the early days of Rupert Murdoch’s tabloid empire, starring Guy Pearce, Jack O’Connell, and Claire Foy.

Opening night carries its own mystique regardless of a film’s ultimate prospects. Boyle sits further down the odds as a genuine dark horse, but his Lido debut is among the most anticipated arrivals of the entire year.

The jury behind this year’s Golden Lion is led by Maggie Gyllenhaal. She’s a filmmaker herself, not just an actress, which tends to produce juries with different instincts than ones led by pure performers.

She’s joined by an unusually international panel. including Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, Hong Kong’s Johnnie. As well as French filmmaker Xavier Giannoli, Afghan director Shahrbanoo Sadat, composer Daniel Blumberg, and film scholar Francesco Casetti.

This is a jury built to reward formal ambition and genuine risk over safer, conventional prestige filmmaking.

That’s part of why a swing as strange as ‘Primetime‘ has real traction as the frontrunner, rather than reading as an outlier curiosity.
