With Spider-Man: Brand New Day now playing exclusively in theaters, audiences have finally learned who Sadie Sink has been portraying all along—and the internet got it right.
After months of speculation fueled by set photos, cryptic trailers and countless fan theories, Sink officially debuts as Jean Grey, introducing one of Marvel’s most iconic X-Men characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It’s a reveal that had been hiding in plain sight.
When the first trailer debuted earlier this year, eagle-eyed fans immediately noticed a brief shot of Sink wearing a green jacket, prompting widespread theories that she was playing Jean Grey, whose classic comic-book look frequently incorporates green alongside her unmistakable red hair. Marvel Studios refused to confirm or deny the rumors, allowing speculation to build right up until opening weekend.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton admitted the secrecy wasn’t designed to create headlines—it was intended to preserve the theatrical experience.
Ahead of the film’s release, Cretton explained that revealing Sink’s role beforehand would have diminished one of the movie’s biggest surprises, adding that audiences would have “a much cooler experience” discovering certain moments for themselves inside the theater.
The strategy appears to have worked.
Sink joins an ensemble led once again by Tom Holland as Peter Parker, alongside returning stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows Peter after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, living in a world where no one remembers his identity while struggling with isolation, guilt and the consequences of the life he chose.
As Peter attempts to move forward, a dangerous new threat emerges, forcing him back into action while opening the door to the next evolution of the MCU.
Jean Grey’s arrival is one of the franchise’s most significant character introductions since Marvel Studios regained access to the X-Men library following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. While mutants have slowly begun appearing throughout the MCU in recent years, Brand New Day marks the highest-profile introduction yet of one of Marvel’s defining heroes.
For Sink, the role represents the realization of a longtime dream.
The actress previously revealed that Spider-Man had always been her favorite Marvel character and described joining the franchise as a full-circle moment, comparing it to becoming part of Stranger Things after already being a fan of the series. She also reunited with director Destin Daniel Cretton, whom she first worked with as a teenager, making the project especially meaningful.
“I love Tom’s Spider-Man,” Sink previously said while reflecting on joining the franchise. “To be a fan of something and then join it is a familiar feeling for me.”
