Every Colleen Hoover Movie Has Split Critics Right Down the Middle. Can ‘Verity’ Break the Pattern?

Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson lead the most anticipated Hoover adaptation yet, arriving after a run of films that made money and divided reviewers in equal measure.

Colleen Hoover has built one of the most reliable box office engines in publishing-to-film adaptation. She’s also built one of the most consistent gaps between audience love and critical reception in recent memory. It Ends With Us grossed nearly $351 million worldwide in 2024 and settled at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. Regretting You followed with a rougher 28%. Reminders of Him landed at 56%, still the best of the three but nowhere near Certified Fresh. Three films, three mixed-to-poor Tomatometer scores, and three commercial successes that proved Hoover’s audience doesn’t need critics on board to show up opening weekend.

Verity arrives October 2 as the fourth entry in that run, and it comes in with a genuinely different pedigree behind it. That gap between what critics have rewarded and what readers actually want is exactly what makes this one worth watching closely.

A Different Kind Of Adaptation

Michael Showalter directs from a script by Nick Antosca, with Hoover herself credited as a writer. Showalter and Anne Hathaway have made this pairing before, on Prime Video’s The Idea of You, which gives this one a working shorthand the earlier Hoover films didn’t have.

Hathaway stars as Verity Crawford, a renowned author left unable to speak or walk after a mysterious accident. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, the struggling writer hired to ghostwrite Verity’s unfinished series. When Lowen discovers what looks like Verity’s own chilling autobiographical manuscript, the line between fiction and reality starts to collapse. Complicating things further is Lowen’s entanglement with Verity’s husband, Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett. Ismael Cruz Cordova and Brady Wagner round out the cast. The film carries an R rating, a first for a Hoover adaptation.

The Hathaway Factor

For Hathaway, this marks her fifth release of the year. That’s a genuinely rare stretch, spanning epic, comedy, horror, and now psychological thriller without repeating a single register. Early trailer reactions have specifically praised her tonal commitment. Reviewers note there’s no sign of Hathaway fatigue yet, given how deliberately she’s varied her material all year. That range matters here specifically, since Verity is being pitched as her darkest turn yet, a real departure from the register most audiences associate with her.

What The Industry Is Watching?

The bigger question hanging over the film is whether it breaks the pattern the previous three Hoover adaptations set. Early buzz has been genuinely strong. However, trailer reactions have called the tone unsettling and effective, exactly what a psychological thriller needs to land.

Hoover’s track record with critics is well established by now. Industry observers are treating Verity as a real test case. Does a stronger cast and a director with genuine dramatic range finally bridge the gap between what Hoover’s readers want and what critics have historically been willing to reward?

Verity also isn’t opening into an empty weekend. It shares its October 2 release date with Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s highly anticipated Digger starring Tom Cruise, another awards-season swing landing the exact same day. Additionally, the first weekend of October has historically boosted bestseller thrillers, citing Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. That history offers some encouragement, even with real competition on the calendar.

Where The Market Stands?

With no reviews out yet ahead of the October release, that question remains genuinely open. The previous three adaptations scored anywhere from the high 20s to the mid-50s, and the uncertainty around where Verity lands is exactly the kind of question worth tracking closely over the next several weeks, right up until reviews actually start posting.

That uncertainty is exactly the kind of thing being priced in real time on Kalshi, where a live market already exists on where Verity lands on Rotten Tomatoes. See where the full market currently stands, updated live, on Kalshi.
