Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre lead the DC Studios drama arriving later this summer.

HBO Max has released the first teaser for Lanterns, the upcoming DC Studios series starring Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre and Kelly Macdonald. The show is scheduled to premiere later this August on HBO and will stream on HBO Max.

The series centers on Green Lantern Corps recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and legendary Lantern Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler. Together, the two intergalactic peacekeepers are pulled into a dark mystery on Earth while investigating a murder in the American heartland.

Rather than focusing purely on cosmic spectacle, Lanterns appears to lean into a grounded investigative tone, blending the mythology of DC’s Green Lantern universe with a noir-inspired mystery unfolding far from the stars. The series’ logline positions the characters less as traditional superheroes and more as space-faring detectives navigating a conspiracy that reaches deep into human territory.

Behind the scenes, the project brings together a group of heavy hitters from across prestige television and comics. The pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and comic writer Tom King, who also serve as co-creators. Mundy acts as showrunner for the series.

James Hawes directs the first two episodes, with additional episodes helmed by Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, along with Tom King, Ron Schmidt and Hawes.

The show marks one of the most anticipated live-action projects in DC Studios’ new era under Gunn and Safran, with the studio aiming to expand the universe beyond theatrical releases and into prestige television. While the teaser reveals little of the story itself, the tone suggests a more grounded approach than previous attempts at adapting the Green Lantern mythology.

Lanterns premieres later this August on HBO and HBO Max.
