‘Project Hail Mary’ First Reactions Praise Ryan Gosling in Phil Lord & Chris Miller’s Space Epic

Early buzz suggests Ryan Gosling may have another crowd-pleasing sci-fi hit on his hands.

The first wave of reactions to ‘Project Hail Mary’ has officially landed, and the early word out of press screenings suggests Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s ambitious sci-fi adaptation could be one of the year’s biggest theatrical events. Critics are already rallying behind Ryan Gosling’s performance, with many calling the film an emotional, visually striking crowd-pleaser that blends humor, spectacle and heart in equal measure. 

Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, the film follows Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. As his memory slowly returns, he realizes he has been sent on a desperate mission to stop a mysterious threat that could extinguish the sun.  It’s a high-concept premise tailor-made for Lord and Miller’s blend of wit and scale — and if early reactions are any indication, the duo may have pulled it off.

Several critics were quick to crown the film a major win for Gosling. Early social reactions repeatedly single him out as the emotional anchor of the film, with one critic calling him the “shining star” of a compassionate story about connection and survival.  Another early viewer went even further, labeling the film “the first great blockbuster of 2026” and praising its “out-of-this-world cinematography.” 

That enthusiasm appears to extend beyond just the lead performance. Multiple reactions highlight the film’s tonal balance — a tricky mix of humor, high-stakes drama and emotional payoff. Critics noted that Lord and Miller lean into the story’s humanity while still delivering the large-scale spectacle audiences expect from modern sci-fi. One early reaction described the film as a “successfully sophisticated blend of humor, sci-fi, drama and suspense,” while another called it “pure joy” that keeps its lengthy runtime moving at rocket speed. 

Still, not every response was without reservation. At least one critic suggested the script may occasionally struggle under the weight of its ambitions, citing pacing issues and narrative excess. But even the more measured takes tend to circle back to the same conclusion: Gosling’s performance — and the film’s emotional core — largely smooth over the rough edges. 

From an industry standpoint, the early chatter positions ‘Project Hail Mary’ as more than just another effects-driven studio play. There is already quiet awards speculation circulating in early reactions, particularly around Gosling’s performance and Greig Fraser’s cinematography. Whether that momentum holds through release remains to be seen, but the conversation has clearly begun.

For audiences — and for Amazon MGM — the bigger question is whether the film can translate strong first reactions into sustained box office momentum. Lord and Miller have built a reputation for delivering inventive crowd-pleasers, and Andy Weir adaptations already carry built-in goodwill thanks to the success of ‘The Martian.’ If ‘Project Hail Mary’ sticks the landing with general audiences, it could emerge as one of 2026’s defining studio plays.

For now, the early signal is clear: the mission is off to a strong start.
