Michael Keaton Says There’s a “Strong Possibility” Marvel and DC Universes Wouldn’t Exist Without Tim Burton

During a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Keaton shared his thoughts on the impact of Tim Burton’s vision on the modern superhero genre. Keaton, who famously portrayed Batman in Burton’s 1989 film and its 1992 sequel, believes that Burton’s unique approach laid the groundwork for the massive success of both the Marvel and DC cinematic universes.

“There’s a strong possibility that none of this would exist without Tim,” Keaton remarked. He credited Burton with introducing a darker, more complex portrayal of superheroes, which has become a defining characteristic of the genre. Keaton’s portrayal of Batman, guided by Burton’s direction, departed from the campy tone of earlier adaptations and instead presented a more nuanced and tormented character.

Keaton also reflected on the legacy of Burton’s Batman films and their influence on subsequent generations of filmmakers.
