BAFTA Film Awards 2026 Longlists: ‘One Battle After Another’ Surges Ahead as ‘Hamnet’ and ‘Sinners’ Follow Close Behind

Graphic Via The cinema Group

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another emerges as the early BAFTA frontrunner, with Hamnet, Sinners, and Marty Supreme shaping a crowded and increasingly international awards race.

With awards season accelerating on both sides of the Atlantic, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has officially entered the conversation — and the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards longlists make one thing clear: One Battle After Another is the film to beat.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically charged drama leads all contenders with 16 longlist mentions, cementing its status as a transatlantic heavyweight after already dominating critics’ groups earlier in the season. Close behind are Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet and Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending Sinners, each scoring 14 mentions, reinforcing their momentum as major players in both craft and above-the-line categories.

Josh Safdie’s kinetic ping-pong odyssey Marty Supreme isn’t far back, earning 13 mentions, while Yorgos Lanthimos’ sharp-edged satire Bugonia and Guillermo del Toro’s gothic reimagining Frankenstein each landed 12 appearancesacross the longlists. Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value and Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good also made strong impressions, with eight mentions apiece, underscoring BAFTA’s continued embrace of both arthouse prestige and large-scale studio filmmaking.

The Best Film longlist reflects that balance, with contenders ranging from intimate character studies like Hamnet and Sentimental Value to ambitious spectacles including Sinners, Frankenstein, and Marty Supreme. Notably, One Battle After Another remains a fixture across nearly every major category, positioning it as the most broadly supported title in the field.

In the Best Director race, Anderson faces stiff competition from an unusually international slate, including Zhao, Coogler, Lanthimos, Trier, Josh Safdie, Kathryn Bigelow (A House of Dynamite), Lynne Ramsay (Die My Love), Hikari (Rental Family), and Kaouther Ben Hania (The Voice of Hind Rajab). The breadth of styles and sensibilities here signals a director’s race that may be far less predictable than the film category itself.

Acting categories are similarly stacked. Leading Actress contenders include Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), Emma Stone (Bugonia), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good), Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), and Tessa Thompson (Hedda), among others. On the Leading Actor side, recent Critics’ Choice winner Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) appears alongside Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), and Cillian Murphy (Steve).

The Supporting races further highlight the season’s depth, with names like Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, Carey Mulligan, Ariana Grande, Wunmi Mosaku, Teyana Taylor, and Stellan Skarsgård all making the cut — many representing films that are overperforming across multiple categories.

BAFTA’s longlists also emphasize strength below the line, where One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Sinners, Marty Supreme, and Frankenstein repeatedly appear in cinematography, editing, costume design, production design, score, sound, and casting categories. These technical showings often prove decisive in the final nomination round — and, eventually, on Oscar ballots.

The final BAFTA nominations will be determined during voting from January 9–20, with the winners announced at the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 22, hosted by Alan Cumming at London’s Royal Festival Hall. As always, the results are expected to play a significant role in shaping the final stretch of the global awards race.
