Fox’s new ‘Baywatch’ brings Stephen Amell’s Hobie Buchannon back to the beach, with Jessica Belkin, Shay Mitchell, Hassie Harrison, Noah Beck, Brooks Nader and more joining the lifeguard drama.

Fox is getting ready to bring ‘Baywatch’ back to television, and the first teaser for the reboot makes one thing clear: the red swimsuits, beach rescues and sun-soaked drama are very much part of the plan.

The new series is set to premiere on Fox in January 2027, with Stephen Amell leading the cast as Hobie Buchannon, the once-wild child of the original franchise who is now a Baywatch captain following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Mitch Buchannon. In the teaser, Hobie describes serving as a Baywatch captain as “the best job in the world,” a line that neatly positions the reboot as both a legacy continuation and a modern refresh of one of television’s most recognizable beach dramas.

The reboot’s central hook is personal as much as procedural. Hobie’s life is upended when his daughter, Charlie Vale, played by Jessica Belkin, arrives eager to carry on the Buchannon family legacy and become a Baywatch lifeguard herself. That father-daughter setup gives the new version a direct connection to the original series while creating a new generational story around legacy, responsibility and the dangers of Southern California’s shoreline.

The ensemble includes Hassie Harrison as Nat, Shay Mitchell as Trina, Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, Noah Beck as Luke and Brooks Nader as Selene. Livvy Dunne will make her acting debut in a recurring role as Grace, while David Chokachi is set to reprise his original ‘Baywatch’ role as Cody Madison. Original stars Michael Bergin and Kelly Packard are also expected to appear as Jack “J.D.” Darius and April Giminski, adding more nostalgia to the reboot’s first season.

Fox’s new ‘Baywatch’ comes from Fox Entertainment and Fremantle, with Matt Nix serving as showrunner and executive producer. McG, who directed the series premiere, also executive produces alongside Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto and Mike Horowitz.

The original ‘Baywatch’ premiered in 1989 and became a global television phenomenon, airing in more than 200 countries and reaching more than 1 billion viewers weekly at its peak. The new series is being positioned as a continuation of that legacy, promising adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry and a renewed mission to protect the Southern California coast.

That combination of nostalgia and reinvention is the obvious selling point. ‘Baywatch’ is one of those titles that does not need much explanation: beach, danger, romance, slow motion, red swimsuits, impossible tans and lifesaving heroics. But the challenge for Fox will be proving that the franchise can work for a contemporary broadcast audience without becoming pure parody or empty IP recycling.

The teaser appears to lean into the show’s original appeal rather than run away from it. Amell gives the reboot a recognizable TV lead, while the broader cast mixes established actors, reality personalities, athletes and social media figures in a way that feels designed to extend ‘Baywatch’ beyond traditional network audiences. Whether that mix becomes a strength or a distraction will likely determine how the reboot is received.

For now, Fox has a clear hook: a legacy character stepping into leadership, a daughter arriving to continue the Buchannon name and a new generation of lifeguards taking over one of television’s most famous beaches.

‘Baywatch’ returns in January 2027 on Fox.
