The Academy’s 2026 class adds a new wave of Oscar voters across acting, directing, producing, music, documentary, animation and executive branches, continuing the organization’s push toward a more global and diverse membership.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is adding another major class of Oscar voters.

The organization has invited 529 new members to join its 2026 class, with Jacob Elordi, Jenna Ortega, Teyana Taylor, Jon Bernthal, Josh O’Connor, Julia Garner, Mia Goth, Simu Liu, Jenny Slate, Stephen Fry and the Safdie brothers among the most recognizable names. If all invitees accept, the Academy’s total membership will rise to 11,319, with 10,338 voting members eligible to help decide future Oscar nominees and winners.

The class includes 95 Oscar nominees, 21 winners and three Scientific and Technical Awards recipients. In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said the organization was “delighted” to invite the new group of film artists and professionals, citing their contributions to the global movie industry.

The makeup of the class is the larger story. According to the Academy, this year’s invitees are 42% women, 56% from underrepresented communities and 53% from 60 countries and territories outside the United States. If all invitations are accepted, the Academy’s overall membership will be 36% women, 25% from underrepresented communities and 22% international. That reflects the organization’s continued effort to broaden its voting body after the #OscarsSoWhite backlash that pushed the Academy to expand and diversify its ranks over the last decade.

The acting branch features one of the most headline-friendly groups. Elordi, who appears in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein,’ joins alongside Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Teyana Taylor, Julia Garner, Josh O’Connor, Jon Bernthal, Simu Liu, Anthony Ramos, Bill Skarsgård, Scoot McNairy, David Dastmalchian, Jemaine Clement, Paddy Considine, Wood Harris, Tig Notaro, Lily Rabe, Jenny Slate, Josh Gad, Stephen Fry and Mathieu Amalric. It is a mix of rising stars, genre favorites, veteran performers and character actors whose influence has often outpaced their Oscar recognition.

The directors branch also adds several major contemporary filmmakers, including Zach Cregger, Benny Safdie, Josh Safdie, James Ponsoldt, Raven Jackson, Kim Jee-woon, Alonso Ruizpalacios, Fernanda Valadez, Oliver Laxe, Guan Hu and Daniel Goldhaber. The Safdies, who have worked together and separately across projects including ‘Uncut Gems,’ ‘Marty Supreme’ and ‘The Smashing Machine,’ were among several multihyphenates invited by more than one branch and will have to choose one branch if they accept.

The invitation list also captures the Academy’s broader reach beyond actors and directors. Sara Bareilles, EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Glenn Slater and other music figures were invited through the music branch, while ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ filmmakers Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang were among the animation invitees. In documentary, the class includes filmmakers and producers connected to projects such as ‘The Alabama Solution,’ ‘Selena y Los Dinos,’ ‘The Remarkable Life of Ibelin,’ ‘The Perfect Neighbor,’ ‘SLY LIVES!’ and ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.’

Executives and industry leaders also appear throughout the class, including Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro, New York Film Festival’s Dennis Lim and NBCUniversal executive Liz Jenkins. The marketing and public relations branch welcomed names from companies including Accolade Publicity, Strategy PR, Independent Film Company, Critics Choice, Divergent PR and Narrative PR, underscoring how much the Academy now recognizes the full machinery of awards campaigns and film culture, not only the people visible on screen.

The new class arrives as the Academy continues to modernize both its membership and its rules. Recent changes include evolving eligibility standards around artificial intelligence, with the acting branch limiting recognition to roles performed by humans with consent and the writing branch requiring eligible screenplays to be human-authored. Those moves place the Academy’s membership expansion within a larger institutional shift, as the Oscars try to respond to both the globalization of cinema and the changing technology shaping the industry.

POPULAR ON THE CINEMA GROUP

Not every notable name is part of the new class. Ryan Coogler remains outside the Academy after previously revealing that he declined an invitation nearly a decade ago. His producing partner and wife, Zinzi Coogler, was also not included in this year’s invite list, despite her recent historic recognition as part of the producing team behind ‘Sinners.’ Their absence stands out because of the film’s awards impact and because the Academy’s membership process remains invitation-based rather than application-based.

That process is still tightly controlled. Oscar nominees are automatically considered for membership in the year they are nominated, while non-nominees require sponsorship and approval through branch executive committees, the Membership Committee and the Board of Governors. Being invited does not automatically make someone a member; only those who accept will join the Academy’s rolls this year.

Still, the 2026 invite list offers a revealing snapshot of where the Oscars are heading. The Academy is still built around prestige, legacy and branch expertise, but its center of gravity continues to shift toward a younger, more international and more culturally varied voting body. The presence of Elordi, Ortega, Taylor, Goth, Garner, Cregger, the Safdies and the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ team makes this class feel connected not only to traditional awards cinema, but also to the genres, fandoms and global audiences shaping the next era of film.

For the Oscars, that matters. The Academy is not just adding names to a list. It is reshaping the body that decides what gets remembered.
