Box Office Milestone: ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ Soars Past $300M in U.S. and $600M Globally

'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' NINTENDO AND ILLUMINATION

Illumination’s sequel continues its dominant global run as ‘Project Hail Mary’ holds strong and ‘You, Me & Tuscany’ opens to solid early results.

Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is continuing its dominant box office run, soaring past $300 million domestically and $600 million globally in its second weekend, becoming the first Hollywood release of 2026 to hit either milestone.

The animated sequel is expected to top the weekend chart with nearly $70 million in North America, bringing its domestic total to an estimated $308.1 million through Sunday. Overseas, the film is projected to add another $90 million across 81 markets, pushing its international total to roughly $327 million as global momentum continues to outperform early projections.

The performance marks one of the strongest theatrical runs of the year so far, with the film benefiting from strong family turnout, repeat viewings, and sustained international interest. Industry analysts continue to point to the franchise’s global appeal as a key driver behind its accelerated box office pace.

Elsewhere, Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary continues its strong run in its fourth weekend, earning an estimated $28 million and bringing its domestic total into the $258 million range. The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film remains one of the strongest original titles of the year, showing rare staying power for a non-franchise release.

A24

A24’s The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, is also holding better than expected, dropping just 21 percent in its second weekend for an estimated $9 million and an early domestic total of $31 million. The film’s steady hold suggests continued audience interest following its debut.

Meanwhile, Universal’s new romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany is opening to an estimated $8 million in fourth place. The release has drawn attention for marking a return of theatrical rom-coms centered on Black leads, a gap last filled by 2012’s Think Like a Man.

Producer Will Packer has previously noted the industry’s long-standing hesitation toward theatrical rom-coms and films led by diverse casts, with many titles increasingly shifted toward streaming platforms rather than given full theatrical support.

Directed by Kat Coiro, You, Me & Tuscany stars Halle Bailey as a chef who secretly moves into a vacant Italian villa and develops a relationship with the cousin of the property’s owner, played by Regé-Jean Page. The film has earned strong early audience response, including an A– CinemaScore and a 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes audience score, signaling potential long-term stability.

Final weekend numbers will be updated Monday morning.
