‘Game of Thrones’ Movie Officially in the Works at Warner Bros. With ‘Andor’ Writer Beau Willimon

HBO

The planned film will center on Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros as the franchise eyes its first theatrical expansion.

The world of Game of Thrones may finally be heading to theaters.

Warner Bros. is officially developing a feature film set in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe, with Andor and House of Cards writer Beau Willimon attached to pen the script. The project will focus on the legendary story of Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros — one of the most pivotal events in the franchise’s mythology.

The news was first teased in a recent cover story profile of Martin, which revealed that both HBO and the Warner Bros. film division have been exploring separate versions of the same historical chapter from Westeros. While HBO has been considering a series centered on the conquest, the Warner Bros. project is envisioned as a large-scale theatrical epic.

According to early reporting, the studio hopes to build something closer in scale to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune — a sweeping cinematic spectacle capable of launching Game of Thrones into the blockbuster fantasy arena.

The idea of a Game of Thrones movie has circulated for more than a decade. As early as 2013, original showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss pitched HBO the idea of concluding the series with three theatrical films similar to The Lord of the Rings. HBO ultimately rejected the proposal, preferring to keep the franchise tied to its subscription television model.

Now, with the success of multiple spinoffs, the possibility of Westeros reaching cinemas appears closer than ever.

The potential film also arrives during a moment of uncertainty for Warner Bros. Discovery, which is expected to sell its film and television assets to Paramount Skydance. Paramount CEO David Ellison recently cited Game of Thrones as his favorite HBO series — a signal that the franchise could remain a priority regardless of ownership changes.

Meanwhile, HBO continues to expand Martin’s universe on television. House of the Dragon is preparing to return for its third season later this year, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already moving forward with a second season. Additional projects, including an animated series centered on the legendary sailor Corlys Velaryon — also known as The Sea Snake — are also in development.

Whether the theatrical version of Aegon’s conquest ultimately moves forward alongside HBO’s version remains unclear. But after years of speculation, Westeros appears closer than ever to the big screen.
