The iconic indie showcase prepares for a historic new chapter in Colorado.

The Sundance Film Festival is officially charting its next era. Organizers announced that the 2027 edition of the festival will take place January 21–31, marking the first time the globally influential event will be hosted in Boulder, Colorado.

The move signals a major geographic and cultural shift for the festival, which has long been synonymous with Park City, Utah. Beginning in 2027, Boulder will serve as the new long-term home for the festival, positioning the Colorado city as a major hub for independent film, industry dealmaking and global premieres.

Festival director Eugene Hernandez emphasized the collaborative effort behind the transition, noting that planning is already well underway to ensure a strong debut year. He described Boulder’s location at the base of the Flatirons — combined with the creative energy of the University of Colorado Boulder community — as an ideal environment for filmmakers and audiences to gather, discover new work and spark conversation.

The 2027 event will continue Sundance’s core mission of spotlighting original voices and emerging storytellers. Organizers confirmed the festival will once again feature world premieres, filmmaker conversations, special events and the wide-ranging programming that has made the gathering a cornerstone of the independent film calendar.

Alongside the date announcement, the festival unveiled its first slate of official venues spread across Boulder. The footprint reflects a city-wide approach designed to immerse attendees in multiple neighborhoods while maintaining the walkable, discovery-driven experience Sundance is known for.

Among the confirmed theaters are the Boedecker Theater at Dairy Arts Center, Boulder Theater, Chautauqua Auditorium and Macky Auditorium Concert Hall at the University of Colorado Boulder. Additional screenings will take place at Cinemark Century Boulder, Muenzinger Auditorium, Roe Green Theatre and several school auditoriums repurposed for festival use.

Talks and festival programming will be anchored at key cultural sites including the Canyon Theater at the Boulder Public Library District, the Dairy Arts Center, eTown Hall and Old Main on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. Organizers said more details about programming locations and logistics will be revealed in the coming months.

The relocation represents one of the most significant structural changes in the festival’s modern history. For decades, Sundance has functioned not just as a launchpad for independent films but as a central marketplace for acquisitions, awards momentum and emerging talent discovery. Industry observers will be watching closely to see how the Boulder setting reshapes the festival’s physical flow, industry footprint and overall experience.

Founded in 1981 by Robert Redford, the Sundance Institute has grown into one of the most influential nonprofit organizations supporting independent storytelling. Through labs, fellowships, grants and mentorship programs, the institute has helped launch the careers of filmmakers including Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Chloé Zhao and Taika Waititi, while backing films that have gone on to win major awards and achieve global reach.

Festival leadership framed the Boulder move as an evolution rather than a reinvention. The core mission — championing bold artists and connecting them with audiences — remains unchanged. However, the new setting offers an opportunity to reimagine how the festival operates physically and culturally in the years ahead.

For the industry, the January 2027 edition will be closely watched as both a logistical test and a symbolic reset. If successful, Boulder could quickly cement itself as the new epicenter of the independent film world each winter.
