Gotham Awards 2025 Nominations: Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’ Leads With Record Six Nods

Adam Sandler, Jessie Buckley, Benicio Del Toro, and Teyana Taylor among the nominees as the Gotham Awards open a new season of prestige cinema.

The Gotham Awards have unveiled their 2025 nominations, and history has been made. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another — a $130 million action-epic from Warner Bros. — leads all contenders with six nominations, the most ever recorded in the Gotham Awards’ 35-year history.

The film scored mentions for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and acting nods for Benicio Del Toro, Teyana Taylor, and breakout newcomer Chase Infiniti. It’s the first time a large-scale studio production has dominated the Gothams since the organization lifted its budget cap in 2022, officially opening the door to studio-backed prestige films once considered too expensive for independent recognition.

The shift is emblematic of the Gothams’ evolving identity: no longer a purely indie-focused celebration, but a broader recognition of cinematic excellence across budgets, languages, and distribution platforms.

Joining Anderson’s film in the expanded Best Feature category are ten nominees spanning global auteurs and festival darlings: Bugonia (Yorgos Lanthimos, Focus Features), East of Wall (Sony Pictures Classics), Familiar Touch (Music Box Films), Hamnet (Focus Features), If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (A24), Lurker (Mubi), Sorry, Baby (A24), The Testament of Ann Lee (Searchlight Pictures), and Train Dreams (Netflix).

Hamnet, Sam Mendes’ intimate Shakespearean drama starring Jessie Buckley, and Clint Bentley’s Train Dreams, a Netflix-backed adaptation featuring Joel Edgerton, were also among the morning’s big winners.

Best Director nominees include Anderson alongside Mary Bronstein (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Jafar Panahi (It Was Just an Accident), Kelly Reichardt (The Mastermind), and Oliver Laxe (Sirât), signaling a year dominated by distinctive, formally daring storytellers.

In the gender-neutral Outstanding Lead Performance category, Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) continues her awards momentum alongside Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Tessa Thompson (Hedda), and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).

Supporting Performance honors went to a powerhouse lineup that includes Benicio Del Toro (One Battle After Another), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), and Adam Sandler (Jay Kelly). Sandler’s nomination marks his first Gotham nod since Uncut Gems, reaffirming his status as one of Netflix’s most reliable dramatic stars.

Breakthrough Performer nominees include A$AP Rocky (Highest 2 Lowest), Sebiye Behtiyar (Preparation for the Next Life), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Abou Sangaré (Souleymane’s Story), and Tonatiuh (Kiss of the Spider Woman).

Among the year’s surprises and omissions: Norway’s Sentimental Value failed to make the Best Feature cut despite strong festival buzz, though Stellan Skarsgård and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas were recognized in supporting categories. Marty Supreme and Is This Thing On? were reportedly not completed in time for committee voting.

The Best Screenplay categories saw Anderson’s One Battle After Another and Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accidentcompeting alongside Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent, Eva Victor’s Sorry, Baby, and Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

Gotham Executive Director Jeffrey Sharp praised this year’s nominees for their creative range:

“This year’s nominees celebrate an extraordinary year of cinematic achievement — one defined by bold, original storytelling, festival breakouts, and filmmakers whose independent vision extends across studios and streamers.”

The Gotham Awards — the first major stop on the road to Oscar season — will take place December 1 in New York City, officially kicking off Hollywood’s winter awards circuit.
