NewFest 2025: Richard Linklater's 'Blue Moon' to Open NYC LGBTQ+ Film Festival

The 37th annual NewFest brings queer cinema to NYC with Richard Linklater's 'Blue Moon,' Kristen Stewart's directorial debut, anniversary screenings, and a bold international lineup.

The 37th edition of NewFest, New York's preeminent LGBTQ+ film festival, returns October 9–21, 2025 with over 130 films from 29 countries, immersive events, and a lineup designed to inspire, agitate, and celebrate queer storytelling. Opening the festival is Richard Linklater’s long-awaited Blue Moon, starring Ethan Hawke, Andrew Scott, and Margaret Qualley. Set on the historic opening night of Oklahoma! at Sardi’s, the film promises a witty and wistful look at ambition, love, and Broadway legacy.




Closing night features the New York premiere of Christy, David Michôd's gritty boxing biopic starring Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin, the queer sports icon who fought for more than titles both in and out of the ring. With early Oscar buzz and festival acclaim, Christy bookends the festival with fierce, feminist power.

  • Kristen Stewart’s Directorial Debut: The Chronology of Water, a raw and poetic adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, gets its NYC premiere.

  • Legacy Screenings: Classics like Sunset Boulevard, Desert Hearts, and The Celluloid Closet return for milestone anniversaries.

    Special Events: Netflix’s Boots screening with star Miles Heizer, the 2025 New Voices Grant Showcase, and the 1950 Best Actress Trifecta screening event.


The 2025 slate spans boundary-pushing features, compelling documentaries, animated shorts, and episodic pilots. Standouts include Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor's Dreamers, Tommy Dorfman’s debut I Wish You All the Best, Alice Maio Mackay’s The Serpent’s Skin, and Deborah S. Esquenazi’s Night in West Texas.

Shorts programs range from Dyke Nyte and Here Come the Dolls to Laugh Riot and The Queer Rebellion, each spotlighting LGBTQ+ voices with humor, heartbreak, horror, and radical imagination.


NewFest Executive Director David Hatkoff calls this year's lineup "an act of resistance through celebration," while Director of Programming Nick McCarthy says it's a tribute to stories that honor legacy and defy limitations.


With in-person screenings across Manhattan and Brooklyn, plus select virtual exclusives, NewFest 2025 invites cinephiles to gather, protest, laugh, and cry together. It’s not just a film festival — it’s a movement.

Celebrate the four recipients of the 2025 New Voices Filmmaker Grant, a program NewFest launched in 2022 in partnership with Netflix as part of the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, with a screening of their recent short films. Join us as we share the auspicious work from 2025 grantees MG Evangelista, Shuli Huang, Farah Jabir, and Kevin Xian Ming Yu, and hear what’s to come in their future projects and emerging careers.


Netflix’s BOOTS: Screening & Conversation with Star Miles Heizer, Showrunners and More
Join NewFest for a screening of Netflix’s new coming-of-age series, BOOTS. After episode one, creator and co-showrunner Andy Parker, showrunner Jennifer Cecil, and star Miles Heizer will be joined by one of the show’s veteran advisors Leon Ingleright. Together, they’ll explore the importance of sharing LGBTQ+ military stories, the depiction of resilience and brotherhood in boot camp, and how real-life experiences from the show’s veteran advisors helped inform the series. Don’t miss this powerful conversation about transformation, authenticity, and the ongoing challenges—and vital importance—of telling LGBTQ+ stories in and out of uniform.

Now in its eighth year, NewFest is thrilled to collaborate with NYC’s Department of Education on this uplifting shorts program curated for LGBTQ+ teens. These upbeat, affirming films — from intergenerational bonds to magical drag foxes — give queer youth the chance to see themselves on screen and feel inspired to tell their own stories. The in-person screening of this program on Thursday, October 16th at 4pm is open exclusively to LGBTQ+ students and staff, youth organizations and school GSAs. Registration is free.
