Lily James boards a high-stakes underwater thriller with Chris Hemsworth in Amazon MGM’s upcoming action film Subversion — described as “Die Hard on a submarine.”

Lily James has officially joined Subversion, an action-packed submarine thriller starring Chris Hemsworth and directed by 7500 filmmaker Patrick Vollrath for Amazon MGM Studios.

Scripted by Andrew Ferguson, the film has been described as “Die Hard on a submarine” — a tightly wound maritime thriller following a disgraced naval commander (Hemsworth) blackmailed into transporting illegal cargo for a cartel-like organization. As he maneuvers through international waters aboard a weaponized submarine, he finds himself locked in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a determined Coast Guard officer (James), who suspects something more sinister beneath the surface.

The project is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, with executive producers Stephen Shafer and Greg Cohen under the di Bonaventura Pictures banner.

Subversion adds to an already busy year for Lily James, who recently premiered Relay opposite Riz Ahmed at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival. The David Mackenzie-directed thriller hits theaters August 22. James will also headline and produce Swiped, a buzzy drama inspired by the life of Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, which will debut at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.

In addition, James is currently filming Harmonia, a psychological thriller from Oscar-winning director Guy Nattiv, and recently wrapped Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, an action noir from legendary Japanese director Takashi Miike for Neon.

James earned critical acclaim and multiple award nominations for her portrayal of Pamela Anderson in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy, and continues to line up high-profile projects across film and television. Production is slated to begin this September in Australia.

Lilly James is repped by UTA and Sloane Weber in the U.S., and Tavistock Wood in the U.K.
