The 'Past Lives' and 'Materialists' filmmaker will pen a follow-up to the 1997 romantic comedy classic
Wedding bells may be ringing once again. Celine Song, the Oscar-nominated writer-director of Past Lives and this year’s sleeper hit Materialists, has signed on to write a sequel to Sony’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, the beloved 1997 romantic comedy that starred Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney.
The new project is still in early development, and while Song is currently only attached as the screenwriter, she is not expected to direct. It also wouldn’t necessarily be her next film.
My Best Friend’s Wedding remains one of the most iconic rom-coms of the 1990s. The original followed best friends Julianne (Roberts) and Michael (Mulroney), who made a pact to marry each other if they were still single at 28. But when Michael becomes engaged to another woman (played by Cameron Diaz), Julianne races to stop the wedding with just four days to spare. The film was a box office smash, grossing $127 million domestically—roughly $256 million when adjusted for inflation.

Song’s attachment signals a major creative swing from Sony, aiming to elevate the sequel with the kind of emotional intelligence and genre reinvention she brought to Past Lives, which was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars. Her recent feature Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, has quietly become a summer standout with $52.1 million earned globally.
The original My Best Friend’s Wedding, directed by P.J. Hogan, was praised for its lush visuals, sharp insights, and subversive take on romantic conventions. In his 1997 review, The Hollywood Reporter’s Duane Byrge noted, “While the plot line has some unsettling pitfalls, this contemporary comedy sparkles with some shrewd insights into the pitfalls of women who are too sophisticated for their own good.”
It remains unclear whether Julia Roberts or any other original cast members are attached or being considered for the sequel.
