Matthew McConaughey & America Ferrera Star in Apple TV+ Wildfire Thriller 'The Lost Bus'

'The Lost Bus' APPLE TV+

Apple TV+ drops the harrowing first trailer for 'The Lost Bus,' based on the true story of a school evacuation during California’s deadliest wildfire.

Apple TV+ has unveiled the intense first trailer for Paul Greengrass’ The Lost Bus, a disaster drama starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera as unlikely heroes who risk their lives to save 23 schoolchildren from a devastating California wildfire. Based on the real-life events chronicled in Lizzie Johnson’s book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire, the film premieres in select theaters on September 19 and hits streaming October 3.

The trailer opens on a seemingly ordinary morning that turns into chaos as flames begin to engulf the Northern California town of Paradise. McConaughey plays Kevin, a disillusioned school bus driver, who answers a desperate radio call about two dozen children trapped at a local elementary school. Ferrera portrays Mary, a dedicated teacher and the children’s only remaining adult support. With walls of fire closing in, downed power lines, and traffic-clogged roads, the trailer teases a race against time to deliver the students to safety—despite impossible odds.

What sets the film apart is its commitment to realism and emotional stakes. McConaughey brings gravitas and grit to Kevin’s reluctant heroism, while Ferrera’s performance grounds the story with maternal ferocity. Director Paul Greengrass, known for kinetic and emotionally charged thrillers like United 93 and Captain Phillips, creates a white-knuckle sense of urgency.

The official synopsis reads: “The Lost Bus is a white-knuckle ride through one of America’s deadliest wildfires as a wayward school bus driver and a dedicated teacher battle to save 23 children from the terrifying inferno.”
