Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren will all return to the Harrigan crime family in MobLand Season Two.
The early renewal also closes the book on reported friction that put Hardy’s future with the show in doubt. Paramount+ is not waiting to see how Season 2 of MobLand performs. The streamer has renewed the crime drama for a third season ahead of its second-season premiere on September 18, with Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren all confirmed to return as fixer Harry Da Souza and Harrigan family patriarch and matriarch Conrad and Maeve. Paramount+’s own announcement put it bluntly: “The Harrigans aren’t going anywhere.”
Hardy’s Season Two Drama
The timing matters more than it might first appear. Reports had circulated for months about Hardy’s uncertain future with the show, following friction during Season 2 production between Hardy, who also serves as an executive producer, and showrunner and writer Jez Butterworth.
The tension reportedly escalated enough that Hardy’s continued involvement became genuinely uncertain, generating false reports at one point that he’d been fired outright. The two eventually resolved things during a meeting in London with executive producer David C. Glasser.
Paramount+’s Head of Originals, Jane Wiseman, had also pushed back publicly on earlier reports that a Season 3 deal was already done, clarifying that only a writers’ room had been active up to that point. This week’s announcement puts all of that speculation to rest.
Why The Numbers Made This An Easy Call Regardless?
The underlying performance case for renewal was never really in question. MobLand‘s Season 1 premiere drew 2.2 million global viewers, a record for any Paramount+ series launch at the time, with viewership climbing 298% within a week. By the end of its run, it stood as the streamer’s second-most-watched original series, trailing only 1923. Critics were largely positive too, with the season landing at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Created by Ronan Bennett, with Guy Ritchie directing and executive producing, the show gave Paramount+ a star-driven, adult crime drama with a distinctly British edge at a moment when the service was competing hard for subscribers.
What’s Ahead in MobLand?
Season 2 finds the Harrigans struggling to present a unified front as rising rivals threaten their fracturing criminal empire, with Harry forced to walk an increasingly dangerous line as tensions inside the family boil over.
Paddy Considine, Joanne Froggatt, Lara Pulver, Anson Boon, Mandeep Dhillon, Jasmine Jobson, Teddie Allen, Emmett J. Scanlan, Johnny Flynn, Ophelia Lovibond, Janet McTeer, and Toby Jones round out the supporting cast. The ten-episode season rolls out weekly starting September 18, with the finale set for November 20.
Renewing before a season has even aired is always a bet that the story has somewhere left to go. In this case, it’s also a clear signal that whatever tension existed behind the scenes has been fully put to bed.
