‘Outer Banks’ Final Season Sets August Premiere Date as Netflix Reveals First Look

The Pogues return for one last treasure hunt on Aug. 20, with Netflix’s final season following John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope and Cleo after the devastating loss of JJ.

The Pogues are coming home for one final ride.

Netflix has set Aug. 20 as the premiere date for the fifth and final season of ‘Outer Banks,’ ending the action-adventure series with 10 hour-long episodes. The streamer also released the first teaser trailer and new images from the final season, giving fans their first look at the aftermath of Season 4’s devastating ending and the last chapter of the Pogues’ treasure-hunting saga.

Season 5 picks up with John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope and Cleo at their breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco. Stranded far from home, mourning the emotional heart of their crew and having lost the Blue Crown, the Pogues are once again surrounded by enemies. Chandler Groff remains at large, Dalia and the Corsairs are closing in, and the Kooks are making sure the group has no easy homecoming waiting for them.

That setup gives the final season a darker emotional charge than the series has carried before. ‘Outer Banks’ has always mixed sun-soaked adventure, class warfare, romance, friendship and near-impossible treasure hunts, but JJ’s death shifts the final chapter into revenge-story territory. The Pogues are not simply chasing gold this time. They are trying to avenge their best friend, reclaim their future and survive long enough to decide what freedom actually looks like after years of running, fighting and losing.

The returning cast includes Chase Stokes as John B, Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey as Kiara, Jonathan Daviss as Pope, Carlacia Grant as Cleo, Drew Starkey as Rafe, Austin North as Topper, Fiona Palomo as Sofia, J. Anthony Crane as Chandler Groff and Cullen Moss as Shoupe. Rudy Pankow is not expected to return as a regular following JJ’s death, though the character’s absence clearly remains the emotional engine of the final season.

Netflix renewed ‘Outer Banks’ for its fifth and final season in November 2024, just before the release of the second half of Season 4. At the time, creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke told fans that they hoped to bring the Pogues home in the way they had imagined years earlier, calling Season 5 the last season and suggesting it could be the show’s strongest. That long-planned ending matters for a series built on movement, loyalty and the idea of found family constantly trying to outrun the world stacked against them.

Since premiering in 2020, ‘Outer Banks’ has become one of Netflix’s defining young-adult adventure hits. Its blend of treasure mythology, coastal escapism, teen romance and class conflict helped the series build a passionate fan base across five seasons. The show’s core divide between Pogues and Kooks gave it an instantly recognizable identity, while its escalating treasure hunts turned each season into a bigger, more chaotic adventure.

The final season appears ready to bring that mythology full circle. The official logline describes the Pogues as relying on their scrappy instincts and an uneasy alliance with Rafe to keep from falling apart for good. That alliance may be one of the season’s most interesting dramatic engines. Rafe has spent much of the series as one of its most volatile figures, but the final chapter seems positioned to test whether survival, grief and shared enemies can temporarily blur the line between Pogue and Kook.

For fans, the Aug. 20 premiere date also marks the end of a long wait. Season 4 concluded in November 2024, meaning the final season arrives after more than a year and a half away. That distance gives the return an added weight, especially for a show whose audience has grown up alongside its characters. What began as a beach-town treasure hunt is now ending as a story about grief, loyalty and the cost of chasing freedom across borders, oceans and years of danger.

The first look suggests Netflix is leaning into the scale of the farewell. The images show the Pogues battered but still together, with Rafe, Pope, Cleo, John B and Sarah among the characters featured in the new material. The teaser also frames the final season as a last stand rather than a simple continuation, promising action, emotional fallout and one more attempt to bring the crew back to where it all began.

Whether the Pogues find peace, revenge or another impossible escape remains to be seen. But after five seasons of treasure maps, betrayals, storms, romances, family secrets and near-death adventures, ‘Outer Banks’ is finally preparing to answer the question that has followed the series from the start: can the Pogues ever truly win, or has survival always been the real treasure?

‘Outer Banks’ Season 5 premieres Aug. 20 on Netflix.
