Disney unveils first look at Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic survival thriller starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley ahead of its August 28 theatrical release.

Jacob Elordi is taking center stage in Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars, with Disney unveiling the first trailer during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday, offering an early look at the post-apocalyptic survival thriller ahead of its theatrical release on August 28.

The trailer introduces Elordi as Hig, a young pilot navigating life in a fractured world alongside a hardened military survivalist played by Josh Brolin. Together, the pair have built an isolated but functioning homestead in the aftermath of societal collapse, surviving in a harsh environment defined by scarcity, danger, and distance from civilization.

That fragile balance is disrupted when a mysterious radio transmission interrupts their routine, pushing Hig to venture beyond the boundaries of safety in search of signs of life and connection in a world that appears largely abandoned.

Directed by Ridley Scott, the film is based on Peter Heller’s bestselling novel and continues the filmmaker’s recent return to large-scale genre storytelling. The project also stars Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong, and Allison Janney, adding a high-profile ensemble to the survival narrative.

The screenplay is written by Mark L. Smith, with production handled by Scott alongside Michael Pruss and Cliff Roberts, positioning the film as one of 20th Century Studios’ key theatrical releases of the late summer slate.

The trailer, which debuted in Las Vegas alongside a virtual appearance from Scott, opens with a quieter emotional tone, showing Elordi’s Hig and Qualley’s character in an earlier period of relative stability. The two are seen bringing home a dog, establishing a brief sense of domestic normalcy before the world fully collapses around them.

That opening contrast quickly gives way to the harsh realities of survival, with Brolin’s character bluntly asking Hig what he did before the world ended. Hig responds with a line that frames the emotional core of the story: he was “kissing my wife, playing with my dog, wondering every day how I got so lucky.”

As the footage progresses, Hig is shown piloting a small aircraft across vast, desolate terrain, with flashbacks revealing fragments of his life before the collapse, including intimate moments shared with his wife as she expresses fear over whether he will return home.

The trailer builds toward escalating tension, ending with Hig taking flight while being pursued by hostile figures on horseback who manage to leap onto the wing of his aircraft mid-flight, signaling the film’s shift into high-stakes survival action.

Elordi’s casting marks a change in lead direction for the project, which was originally set to star Paul Mescal, who exited due to scheduling conflicts with Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles film series. Elordi stepped into the role as production moved forward under Scott’s direction.

The Dog Stars is scheduled to hit theaters on August 28.
