Timothée Chalamet eyes his next major role as Warner Bros. acquires Richard Powers’ AI-driven novel ‘Playground.’
Warner Bros. is doubling down on Timothée Chalamet.
The studio has secured the film rights to ‘Playground,’ the acclaimed New York Times bestselling novel by Richard Powers, with Chalamet attached to produce alongside Plan B and Brian Swardstrom. While the project is still in early development, Chalamet is expected to have the first opportunity to star in the adaptation, positioning it as a potential next chapter in one of Hollywood’s most carefully curated careers.
‘Playground’ follows Todd Keane and his closest friends from their university days through the rise of Silicon Valley and into a world shaped by artificial intelligence, environmental stakes and shifting human relationships. The novel spans decades and continents, moving from the tech boom to the remote Polynesian island of Makatea, blending intimate character drama with larger philosophical questions about innovation, progress and what is ultimately lost in the process.
It’s material that feels aligned with where the industry is heading. As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly dominant topic across both tech and entertainment, projects like ‘Playground’ represent a growing wave of storytelling that attempts to grapple with its long-term implications. For Warner Bros., the acquisition signals a continued interest in prestige-driven, conceptually ambitious adaptations that can operate both as awards contenders and large-scale cinematic events.
POPULAR ON THE CINEMA GROUP
For Chalamet, the move further cements his position as one of the few actors of his generation balancing commercial scale with auteur-driven material. He is coming off a run that includes back-to-back Best Actor Oscar nominations and remains at the center of several major studio priorities, including ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which is set for release later this year.
The involvement of Plan B adds another layer of credibility to the project. The production company, founded by Brad Pitt, has built a reputation for shepherding literary adaptations and prestige projects through development into awards-season contenders. Their recent slate continues that trend, blending commercially viable storytelling with material that appeals to both critics and audiences.
Richard Powers, the author behind ‘Playground,’ brings significant literary pedigree to the project. A Pulitzer Prize winner for ‘The Overstory’ and a multiple-time Booker Prize nominee, Powers has become known for writing expansive, intellectually ambitious novels that explore the intersection of humanity, technology and the natural world.
That combination of thematic depth and cinematic scale makes ‘Playground’ a natural fit for adaptation, even if the project remains in its earliest stages. As Warner Bros. continues to navigate a rapidly evolving industry landscape — one increasingly shaped by streaming, consolidation and shifting audience habits — projects like this reflect a clear strategy: invest in recognizable talent, anchor it in prestige source material and build toward something that can resonate both culturally and commercially.
If developed successfully, ‘Playground’ could become more than just another literary adaptation. It has the potential to tap into one of the defining conversations of the next decade — not just about artificial intelligence, but about what it means to remain human in a world increasingly defined by it.
