Early buzz praises Jessie Buckley’s performance and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ambitious reinvention of Frankenstein.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s long-awaited follow-up to The Lost Daughter officially stepped into the spotlight Thursday night as The Bride! held its world premiere in London’s West End  — and the first reactions are exactly what you’d expect from a filmmaker who refuses to play it safe.

The Gothic romance drama, starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, drew immediate praise on social media for its ambition, tonal audacity, and Buckley’s magnetic turn in the title role  . Bale, portraying the film’s lonely monster figure, also earned strong notices from early viewers.

Set in 1930s Chicago, The Bride! reimagines Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein through a warped love story lens  . Bale’s lonesome creature enlists Dr. Euphronios to revive a murdered young woman, bringing Buckley’s Bride to life. What follows, by early accounts, is less tragic fairy tale and more violent, feverish odyssey — a killing spree wrapped in Gothic romance, with police in pursuit  .

Gyllenhaal directs from her own screenplay, drawing inspiration not only from Shelley’s 1818 novel but also from James Whale’s 1935 Bride of Frankenstein  . She produces alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman Keren.

The ensemble is stacked. In addition to Buckley and Bale, the film features Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, and Penelope Cruz  — turning the project into something of a creative family affair.

Full critics’ reviews remain under embargo until March 4  , but with theatrical release set for March 6, Warner Bros. appears positioned for a conversation starter — if not a full awards season contender — in early spring.

If the early tone holds, The Bride! won’t be playing for safety. It’ll be playing for legacy.
