New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week

A wave of wide and limited releases brings horror, comedy, and global cinema to theaters this August.
As summer winds into its final stretch, theaters remain packed with fresh releases, from high-concept horror and family-friendly sequels to international dramas and concert events. Whether you’re looking to escape into a body-swap comedy, a psychological thriller, or a poetic foreign film, this week’s theatrical slate offers something for every kind of moviegoer.
Leading the weekend’s wide releases is Weapons, the mysterious horror thriller from Warner Bros. starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. When an entire class of students disappears without a trace, a small town is thrown into chaos, suspicion, and paranoia. Helmed by Barbarian director Zach Cregger, this one promises elevated genre thrills and a chilling narrative.
Also debuting in wide release is Disney’s Freakier Friday, the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 classic. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis return as Anna and Tess, whose worlds are once again flipped upside down—only this time, their newly blended families are caught in the middle. Equal parts heartwarming and chaotic, it’s a multi-generational comedy with a nostalgic twist.
Beyond the major studio debuts, a number of compelling indies and international titles are arriving in select theaters. Among them: Sudan, Remember Us, a poignant drama from Watermelon Pictures; Souleymane’s Story, a wide release from Kino Lorber; and The Musicians, an artful European import via Outsider Pictures.
