Criterion’s Mobile Closet Heads to TIFF for First International Stop
After conquering the U.S., Criterion’s traveling cinematic treasure trove makes its first international stop.
After wildly successful stops in multiple U.S. cities, the Criterion Mobile Closet is crossing the border for the first time, rolling into Toronto for a four-day run at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) from September 4–7.
Stocked with more than 1,700 of the greatest films from around the world, the Mobile Closet offers more cinematic inspiration per square foot than almost anywhere else. Based on the Criterion Closet Picks series—where filmmakers, stars, and creative luminaries hand-pick their favorite films—the Mobile Closet gives festivalgoers and fans a rare chance to explore the Collection in person and even record their own video.
Where and When:
Criterion
The Toronto stop will be located across the street from TIFF Lightbox at 350 King Street W, with opening hours of 3–7 p.m. on September 4 and 11 a.m.–7 p.m. from September 5–7.
Parking will be limited, so Criterion encourages the use of public transit or rideshare. The experience is first-come, first-serve, with no reservations required. Groups of up to five can enter together for a three-minute session inside the Closet, assisted by the Criterion team. Each visitor will receive a complimentary Criterion tote bag, a printed pocket guide to the collection, and a Polaroid photo with their selections (while supplies last).
How It Works
The Mobile Closet replicates the original Criterion Closet in New York, stocked with every in-print Criterion release, box set, and titles from the Eclipse and Janus Contemporaries lines. Visitors can shop up to three items at a 40% discount—part of Criterion’s 40th anniversary celebration—and may also find limited merchandise available for purchase (credit card only).
POPULAR ON THE CINEMA GROUP
While the camera inside the Closet will be rolling, there’s no requirement to speak on camera or make picks for video. The team will help guide visitors to films that match their tastes, or they can simply browse.
A Festival Detour Worth Taking?
The Cinema Group
At last year’s New York Film Festival, the Criterion Mobile Closet became a sensation—so much so that fans waited 12–15 hours, in pouring rain, for just three minutes inside. TIFF’s stop will likely be no different.
Criterion
For Criterion devotees, this is a bucket-list moment: the chance to step into the famed Closet during TIFF’s buzz and walk away with hand-picked discs in hand. For others juggling packed screening schedules, the time trade-off is steep. Missing two or three major films to rush-pick Blu-Rays into a tote can leave the experience feeling more frantic than magical.
If you go, go prepared—and maybe bring snacks. If not, keep the dream alive and explore our 17 Must-Own Criterion Collection 4K Blu-Rays for Serious Cinephiles to get your fix without the wait.
