Michael Shanks' Feature Debut Blends Psychological Terror and Love in One of Sundance & SXSW’s Most Talked-About Films— Set to Release This summer

How close is too close? Real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco take intimacy to a nightmarish extreme in Together, a psychological body horror film that captivated and unsettled audiences at Sundance. Now, Neon has dropped the first official trailer, offering a chilling glimpse into one of this year’s most unique horror experiences.

Premiering in the Midnight section at Sundance 2025, Together quickly became one of the festival’s biggest breakout hits, sparking a heated bidding war that saw Neon acquire the film for over $17 million. The distributor is set to release the film theatrically on August 1, hoping to replicate the box office success of last summer’s Longlegs—another high-concept horror that became a sleeper hit.

Bound by Love… and Something More Sinister

Neon

Directed by Michael Shanks in his feature debut, Together reimagines the complexities of love and dependency through the lens of unsettling body horror. Brie and Franco play a devoted couple whose relationship takes a disturbing turn when their physical and emotional connection begins manifesting in ways neither of them can control. As the trailer teases, what starts as a seemingly perfect union descends into something grotesque, terrifying, and ultimately inescapable.

The Cinema Group’s Cheif Critic Joanthan P. Moustaks's review described Together as “absurdly inventive, a film that melds gory horror, twisted humor, and raw emotional intimacy into a singular, unsettling experience.” The film taps into primal fears about love and identity, offering a gripping, unpredictable narrative that lingers long after the credits roll.

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman praised Together as "a body-horror movie about a serious thing—love—that never takes itself too seriously," highlighting its balance of dark humor and psychological terror.

For fans of cerebral horror and twisted romance, Together promises a visceral experience that challenges our ideas of love, identity, and personal space—literally.

A Real-Life Couple With a Cinematic Connection

The Cinema Group, SXSW

While the film’s central premise is undeniably eerie, much of the buzz surrounding Together stems from Brie and Franco’s real-life marriage. This isn’t their first time collaborating—previous projects include The Little Hours, The Disaster Artist, Horse Girl, The Rental, and 2023’s Somebody I Used to Know, which they co-wrote and co-produced.

However, Together marks a stark departure from their previous work, trading comedy and drama for visceral horror that delves deep into the unsettling aspects of intimacy and psychological entanglement.

Exclusive: Dave Franco on Bringing Together to Life

Watch our exclusive interview with Dave Franco at the Sundance premiere, where he dives into the creative process behind Together, working alongside Alison Brie, and why this film is one of their boldest collaborations yet. He also discusses how his experience as a director influences his performance in indie films like this, sharing that he focuses on making the director’s job as easy as possible by showing up fully prepared.

With Together set for an August 1 release, Neon appears to be continuing its strategic play in the horror space, following the massive success of Longlegs. The indie distributor has cultivated a strong reputation for releasing smart, atmospheric horror films (Titane, Possessor, Infinity Pool), and Together seems primed to follow suit.

If the Sundance buzz and the spine-chilling trailer are any indications, Together is set to be one of the most talked-about horror films of the year.
