Bleecker Street Acquires Rob Reiner’s ‘Spinal Tap II’ and Sets Fall Release
Bleecker Street
Bleecker Street has officially acquired U.S. distribution rights for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, the highly anticipated sequel to the 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap. In addition to the sequel, the distributor has also secured the rights to the original film, which will be re-released in theaters this summer in a newly restored edition.
The teaser trailer, which was unveiled alongside the announcement, offers a first look at the return of Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as the legendary heavy metal band Spinal Tap. Rob Reiner also reprises his role as documentarian Marty DiBergi, capturing the band's attempt at a reunion concert after a 15-year hiatus. Special appearances from music icons Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood add to the excitement.
Bleecker Street plans to make This Is Spinal Tap widely available on digital and streaming platforms following its theatrical re-release, paving the way for Spinal Tap II, which is set for a wide theatrical launch on September 12. The film is produced by Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matthew George under the Castle Rock Entertainment banner, with executive producers Derrick J. Rossi, Hernan Narea, Jonathan Fuhrman, and Christopher H. Warner.
“We feel privileged for the opportunity to work with Rob Reiner and the brilliant minds behind This Is Spinal Tap,” said Bleecker Street CEO Andrew Karpen and President Kent Sanderson. “Returning to this world through Spinal Tap II is an extraordinary chance to celebrate its legacy while creating something fresh for both new and devoted audiences.”
Reiner expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “So happy to be working with the folks at Bleecker Street who are passionate about keeping Tap’s legacy alive and happy to give Marty DiBergi another shot at relevancy.”
The original This Is Spinal Tap has remained a cultural touchstone since its release, earning a place in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 2002. Now, nearly four decades later, the sequel promises to bring the iconic band back into the spotlight, proving once again that Spinal Tap can always turn it up to 11.
