Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan Reunite in First Trailer for 'Freakier Friday'
Disney
It’s happening—lightning has struck twice! After more than two decades, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are stepping back into their iconic mother-daughter roles in Freakier Friday, the highly anticipated sequel to Disney’s 2003 comedy Freaky Friday. The first trailer has arrived, and this time, the body-swapping chaos is bigger than ever.
Directed by Nisha Ganatra (The High Note, Late Night), Freakier Friday expands on the beloved original, offering a multigenerational twist on the classic tale of identity, empathy, and family. The sequel sees Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) facing a whole new set of challenges—not only are they dealing with their own chaotic lives, but Anna now has a daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter. When another unexpected mystical event takes place, the family finds themselves in the midst of a four-way body swap, bringing even more comedic mayhem and heartfelt moments.
A Star-Studded Reunion and New Faces
Joining Curtis and Lohan are several returning cast members from the original, including Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. The sequel also welcomes fresh faces to the franchise, including The Acolyte’s Manny Jacinto, Never Have I Ever breakout star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Sophia Hammons, and The Fabelmans’ Julia Butters.
The first film, based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, centered on Tess, a widowed therapist on the verge of remarriage, and Anna, her rebellious teenage daughter. After receiving a cryptic fortune cookie, they unwittingly switch bodies, forcing them to navigate each other’s lives in a way they never imagined. The film became an instant favorite, grossing over $160 million worldwide and cementing itself as a modern Disney classic.
A Long-Awaited Sequel Comes to Life
Disney officially confirmed the sequel in March 2024, exciting longtime fans of the franchise. This time, Freakier Fridayis penned by Dollface creator Jordan Weiss, with Andrew Gunn, who produced the original, returning to produce alongside former Disney executive Kristin Burr. The addition of Ganatra as director signals a fresh but faithful continuation of the original’s themes of family, self-discovery, and hilarity.
Speaking about the sequel, Jamie Lee Curtis has expressed her enthusiasm for revisiting the beloved role, stating, “The love for Freaky Friday never went away, and neither did our love for these characters. I can’t wait for fans to see what we’ve done with this next chapter.”
Lohan, whose career has been experiencing a major resurgence, added, “Anna and Tess have grown so much since we last saw them, and this new story is going to be something really special. It’s an absolute dream to reunite with Jamie and the rest of the cast.”
