The Academy unveils its first major awards-season roadmap, spotlighting early contenders across animation, international cinema, craft categories, and below-the-line power players.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially kicked off the next phase of awards season, announcing the shortlists for the 98th Academy Awards across 12 categories. The selections mark the first major narrowing of the field ahead of nominations voting in January and offer a revealing snapshot of which films are gaining traction among Academy branches.

This year’s shortlists span Animated Short Film, Casting, Cinematography, Documentary Feature and Short, International Feature Film, Live Action Short Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Sound, and Visual Effects.
