Colman Domingo is set to be honored at NewFest, New York’s premier LGBTQ+ film festival, where he will receive the Voice & Visibility Award. The award, which celebrates those who have made significant contributions to elevating LGBTQ+ stories, is a testament to Domingo’s impactful career, from his portrayal of Bayard Rustin in Rustin to his work as an actor, writer, and producer.

NewFest’s Executive Director David Hatkoff shared his admiration, saying, “Colman Domingo’s performance as Bayard Rustin was one for the ages.” Domingo’s powerful presence in film, television, and theater over the past two decades has resonated deeply with LGBTQ+ audiences, particularly communities of color. His ability to bring visibility and representation to these stories makes him a fitting recipient of this prestigious award.

The presentation will take place on Saturday, October 12 at the SVA Theatre. Following the ceremony, Domingo will engage in a conversation with Vanity Fair staff writer Chris Murphy, offering insights into his creative journey and advocacy work.

Domingo has received numerous accolades, including Oscar, BAFTA, SAG, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice nominations for Rustin. His other notable works include Euphoria, Fear the Walking Dead, and Sing Sing, the latter of which premiered earlier this year. Through his production company, Edith Prods., he continues to push boundaries, executive producing It’s What’s Inside, and lending his talents to both film and theater.

The 36th Annual New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival, running from October 10-22, features over 140 films, with highlights such as A Nice Indian Boy, Emilia Pérez, and Bird. Special events include a conversation with activist and poet Alok Vaid-Menon, along with the NYC premiere of High Tide. The festival aims to celebrate LGBTQ+ stories and foster discussions around identity and representation.

As Domingo stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “My work has become very purposeful and mindful. I never want to do the same thing twice.” His commitment to telling complex and inspiring stories from marginalized communities has left an indelible mark on the industry.
