Tom Holland is excited about Spider-Man 4, revealing that he read a draft of the script a few weeks ago with his co-star and real-life girlfriend Zendaya. However, during his appearance on the Rich Roll Podcast, Holland candidly shared that, although he loved many aspects of the script, it “needs work, but the writers are doing a great job.”

The revelation comes as fans eagerly await news on the next chapter of the Spider-Man franchise, following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Holland also confirmed that Destin Daniel Cretton, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is in talks to direct this upcoming installment, taking over from Jon Watts, who helmed the first three films.

“One of the things to bear in mind with Marvel is that your film is a small cog in a large machine,” Holland explained. He highlighted the challenges of balancing his project within the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, mentioning that achieving a coherent integration into the overarching story is a tall order but ultimately achievable thanks to the “fantastic people” working on the movie.

Holland added that the film's team already has “a creative and a pitch and a draft, which is excellent.” He emphasized his excitement, noting that when he and Zendaya sat down together to read the draft, they found themselves “bouncing around the living room” at the prospect of bringing the story to fans. Still, Holland admits there are some pieces that need to fall into place before production can fully ramp up.

This upcoming film will mark Holland's fourth standalone outing as Spider-Man, following Spider-Man: Homecoming(2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). His portrayal of Peter Parker has also spanned several other Marvel blockbusters, including Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Last year, Holland spoke to Collider about his thoughts on reprising the iconic role, making it clear that he’d only do so if the story stayed true to Peter Parker's legacy. “I feel very protective over Spider-Man,” Holland said, emphasizing how rare it is for a franchise to grow better with each installment. “I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one,” he asserted, pointing out that, for him, any future film must be worthy of the character’s evolution.

With Holland’s enthusiasm evident, fans can rest assured that, though the Spider-Man 4 script might still need a bit of refining, Holland and the creative team are committed to crafting a film that does justice to Peter Parker’s story. Whether swinging through New York City or navigating the complex relationships in Peter's life, Holland’s passion for the character suggests that when Spider-Man 4 hits theaters, it will be well worth the wait.
