“It was so intense that I... had to leave my body every night”

Patrick J. Adams is opening up about his experience in the Broadway play Take Me Out, where he had to perform nude. The 43-year-old actor made his Broadway debut as Kippy Sunderstrom in the 2022 revival of the play, which went on to earn a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. Set in a baseball locker room, Take Me Out features several characters appearing on stage in the nude, including Patrick's character.

During a recent appearance on his co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast Dinner's On Me, Patrick shared the challenges he faced, particularly during the first time he had to go fully nude during rehearsals. Initially hesitant due to stage fright and anxiety, Patrick recounted how he eventually found a way to mentally detach from the situation and overcome the nerve-wracking experience of being naked on stage.

“When Scott Ellis, the director, came and asked me to do Take Me Out, it was the same thing. I told him, I don’t know that I... I was like, I love that you’re asking me, and it would be an honor. I just don’t know that I can do it,” Patrick told Jesse, referencing his past struggles with panic attacks on stage. “But he said, this is your chance to fix that, essentially. And so I was terrified, obviously, the idea of facing that down—let alone in a play where we had to be naked every night.”

Jesse also revealed that Patrick was the first and only actor to go fully nude during rehearsals for Take Me Out, a fact that Patrick took in stride. Despite his anxiety, Patrick managed to block out the nerves, stating, “I don’t want my clothes off. I want to wear all my clothes. I want layers. And so to have to be in front of that many people every night, it was so intense that I had to go into a different mindset.”

“It was so intense that I think I actually truly had to leave my body every night,” Patrick added, describing how he coped with the situation.

In the same interview, Patrick also discussed the real reason he chose to leave Suits after season seven, shedding light on a major career decision. Patrick is now set to star in an upcoming Yellowstone spinoff series. Stay tuned for more details!
