Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow Near Deal to Return for ‘Romy and Michele’ Sequel
After years of speculation and fan anticipation, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are in final negotiations to reprise their iconic roles in a long-awaited sequel to the 1997 cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
The new film will be helmed by High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle, who also directed Better Nate Than Never for Disney+. Returning to the creative team is original screenwriter Robin Schiff, ensuring that the witty humor and lovable charm of Romy and Michele remain intact. Producer Laurence Mark, who was behind the first film, will also return alongside Barry Kemp.
The original Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion followed two eccentric best friends—Romy (Sorvino) and Michele (Kudrow)—who, after realizing they haven’t achieved the success they once dreamed of, fabricate glamorous careers to impress their former classmates at their 10-year high school reunion. Schiff first created the characters in her 1988 stage play Ladies’ Room, where Kudrow originated the role of Michele before the story made its way to the big screen in 1997. While the film was a moderate box office success at the time, it quickly became a beloved cult favorite, particularly among fans drawn to its quirky humor, outlandish fashion, and message of self-acceptance.

Rumors of a sequel have circulated for years, with both Sorvino and Kudrow teasing its possibility in interviews. In 2022, the duo thrilled fans by reuniting at the SAG Awards, wearing pastel pink and blue suits reminiscent of their characters’ unforgettable metallic minidresses from the film. That same year, Sorvino hinted on Today that a follow-up was “closer than ever” to becoming a reality. Kudrow echoed the sentiment in a SiriusXM interview, revealing that Schiff was actively developing ideas. Now, with the sequel officially moving forward, longtime fans can finally look forward to seeing what’s next for Romy and Michele. Whether they have turned their post-it business into a global empire or are still rocking out to Cyndi Lauper in their convertible, one thing is certain: their return will be nothing short of iconic.
Sorvino is represented by IAG and Circle Management, while Kudrow is repped by CAA. Federle is repped by CAA, Magnet Management, and Jackoway Austen. Schiff is repped by WME.
