DOC NYC 2024 | NOV 13 - DEC 1 |
DOC NYC, the largest documentary film festival in the United States, is set to return this year for its 15th anniversary, boasting an impressive slate of over 110 feature-length documentaries and dozens of shorts. Running from November 13 to November 21 in Manhattan, the festival will also continue online through December 1, offering audiences across the country an opportunity to engage with world-class storytelling and creativity. This year’s lineup is diverse and compelling, featuring intimate character studies, thought-provoking social commentaries, and breathtaking artistic explorations that celebrate the power of documentary cinema. Festival venues include the IFC Center, SVA Theatre, and Village East by Angelika, where attendees can immerse themselves in this remarkable collection of films.
The festival will begin on November 13 with the U.S. premiere of “Blue Road – The Edna O’Brien Story,” directed by Sinead O’Shea. This evocative film presents an intimate portrait of the acclaimed Irish writer Edna O’Brien, delving into her diaries, her groundbreaking literary career, and her indelible impact on feminist literature. With her recent passing, this opening night selection serves as a fitting tribute to O’Brien’s life and legacy, offering viewers insight into her innermost thoughts and experiences in Ireland, London, and New York.
The centerpiece screening of this year’s festival, scheduled for November 14, is the world premiere of “All God’s Children,” directed by Ondi Timoner. The documentary chronicles the work of activist Rabbi Rachel Timoner and Baptist minister Robert Waterman as they endeavor to bring their Brooklyn congregations together, seeking to overcome centuries of racism and antisemitism. This heartfelt narrative of collaboration and mutual understanding is also featured in DOC NYC’s U.S. Competition and has already garnered significant buzz for its emotional resonance and social impact.
The festival will close on November 21 with the world premiere of “Drop Dead City – New York on the Brink in 1975,” directed by Peter Yost and Michael Rohatyn. Set against the backdrop of 1970s New York City, this gripping documentary illustrates how the city teetered on the edge of financial collapse, using vivid archival footage and firsthand accounts from those who lived through the crisis. The story of the “Drop Dead” headline and the circumstances surrounding President Ford’s refusal to bail out the city offers a fascinating glimpse into New York’s turbulent past.
Festival Highlights and Featured Films
One of the most anticipated aspects of DOC NYC this year is its focus on world and U.S. premieres, many of which provide windows into global struggles and human resilience. “After the Rain: Putin’s Stolen Children Come Home,” directed by Sarah McCarthy, is one such film. It documents the heart-wrenching stories of Ukrainian children forcibly taken to Russia during the ongoing war. This deeply moving documentary highlights the experiences of a few who were fortunate enough to be repatriated, including 15-year-old protagonist Veronika Vlasova, whose story embodies both the hope and heartbreak of a community in conflict.
Another poignant world premiere is Joel ‘Kachi Benson’s “Mothers of Chibok,” which tells the story of Nigerian mothers still grappling with the emotional trauma of their daughters being kidnapped by Boko Haram. The film provides a raw, unflinching look at how these women maintain hope and resilience in the face of ongoing adversity. Similarly, “Yalla Parkour,” directed by Areeb Zuaiter, which premieres at DOC NYC, juxtaposes the filmmaker’s memories of Gaza with the story of a young parkour enthusiast in Nablus, offering an intimate portrait of youth and freedom against a backdrop of conflict.
Fashion aficionados will be drawn to the world premiere of “Thom Browne: The Man Who Tailors Dreams,” directed by Reiner Holzemer. This feature documentary explores the creative journey of the iconic American designer, known for redefining the classic men’s suit and for his dramatic runway presentations. Thom Browne’s ability to merge personal identity with high fashion makes this an essential selection for anyone interested in art, culture, and creativity.
The festival’s U.S. Competition section includes films that examine life in modern America, including “The People’s Way,” directed by Ashley Tyner and William Tyner. This powerful documentary follows three community leaders in Minneapolis striving to preserve George Floyd’s legacy and fight systemic injustice. Meanwhile, “Vice is Broke,” directed by Eddie Huang, provides a freewheeling exploration of the meteoric rise and subsequent fall of the Vice media empire—a company that once epitomized the millennial dream but now serves as a cautionary tale about the challenges of modern media.
In addition to its feature-length documentaries, DOC NYC will continue to celebrate the art of short documentary filmmaking with its Shorts Competition, the DOC NYC U Competition (which highlights work from NYC student filmmakers), and an out-of-competition special presentation of “In the Making” Season 3, a series produced by Firelight Media and American Masters. These shorts address topics ranging from personal identity and community to environmental activism, and are sure to captivate and inspire festival-goers.
