Demi Moore to Be Honored at French Cinematheque

Demi Moore, whose standout performance in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance is generating Oscar buzz, will be honored with a special tribute at the French Cinematheque in Paris on November 5, just before the movie’s local release.

The one-day tribute event is co-hosted by Mubi—the international distributor and streamer behind the film’s release in the U.S., U.K., Latin America, and Germany—and Metropolitan, which is managing the French theatrical release, alongside the French Cinematheque.

The Substance is a feminist body-horror film that stars Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a recently fired daytime TV host who takes a black market drug to create a younger version of herself, with dire and dangerous side effects. Moore’s performance has been widely praised as one of her best, leading to increasing buzz about a potential Oscar nomination.

Released in theaters on September 20, The Substance has already grossed $53.6 million worldwide, including $14.5 million in North America, making it Mubi’s most successful box office release to date. Moore’s performance has helped make it one of France’s most anticipated films for the fourth quarter. The actress, beloved in France, spent several months in the country filming the Los Angeles-set movie, with some exterior scenes shot in the South of France.

Since its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay, The Substance has gained considerable momentum and solid word-of-mouth praise. There is growing Oscar buzz for Moore, who could receive her first nomination for Best Actress. Mubi is also pushing the film for nominations in major categories, including Best Director, Original Screenplay, Visual Effects, and Hair and Makeup.

The tribute at the French Cinematheque will also include screenings of some of Moore’s most iconic films, such as Ridley Scott’s G.I. Jane and Jerry Zucker’s Ghost. Moore will deliver a masterclass during the event, culminating in an official homage and the French premiere of The Substance, presented by both Moore and director Coralie Fargeat.

Moore was recently seen in the second season of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and will soon star in the upcoming Paramount+ drama Landman, created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, alongside Jon Hamm and Billy Bob Thornton. Moore is also set to appear in Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters, featuring Keke Palmer, LaKeith Stanfield, and Naomi Ackie.
