Charli xcx’s Sundance breakout delivers A24 its strongest specialty debut in years, signaling a rare crossover moment between pop culture and indie cinema.
A24 has another specialty hit on its hands. The Moment, the Charli xcx–led mockumentary that premiered to buzzy reactions at Sundance, delivered a standout limited debut this weekend, grossing nearly $428,000 across just four theaters — a per-screen average hovering around $107,000.
The result places The Moment among the top three biggest limited openings of the post-COVID era, trailing only Marty Supreme and Asteroid City, and ranking alongside A24’s all-time specialty performers like Uncut Gems. For the studio, it marks a rare convergence of festival prestige, pop-culture immediacy, and real commercial heat.
Directed by Aidan Zamiri in his feature debut and co-written with Charli xcx, the film functions as a satirical, behind-the-scenes portrait of the cultural explosion surrounding “Brat Summer.” Charli stars as a heightened version of herself and also serves as a producer, anchoring a project that leans into performance, image, and the machinery of fame with self-awareness and bite.
Audience demand proved immediate and sustained. More than 60 showtimes sold out across the film’s initial four locations, with presales reportedly moving faster than any prior A24 limited release. The turnout underscores Charli xcx’s ability to translate her music-driven cultural moment into theatrical urgency — a rarity in the current specialty market.

The ensemble cast further bolstered the film’s crossover appeal, featuring Alexander Skarsgård, Kylie Jenner, Rosanna Arquette, Kate Berlant, Jamie Demetriou, and Rachel Sennott — a lineup that bridges indie credibility, internet celebrity, and mainstream recognition.
Following its limited debut, The Moment is set to expand nationwide next weekend, testing whether its early momentum can carry into a broader specialty footprint. If the opening numbers are any indication, A24 may be looking at one of its most culturally resonant releases in years — not just a strong box office performer, but a genuine moment of alignment between artist, audience, and timing.
