‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Trailer Tees Up Adam Sandler’s Return to the Green

The classic comedy character is back—and this time, he’s bringing real PGA champions and a whole lot of chaos with him. Netflix tees off on nostalgia with a modern twist.

Adam Sandler is swinging back into one of his most iconic roles. The official trailer for Happy Gilmore 2 has landed, confirming the long-rumored sequel is real—and it’s coming to Netflix on July 25. Over two decades after the original Happy Gilmore became a cult sports-comedy staple, Sandler reprises his role as the hot-headed, hockey-stick-swinging underdog golfer with the same mix of rage, heart, and zero chill. Directed by Kyle Newacheck (Murder Mystery, Workaholics), the sequel reunites key cast members while updating the tone and stakes for a modern sports world.

The trailer reveals that Happy, now older and unexpectedly wiser, is pulled back into the golf world for one final tournament, pitted against a new generation of elite players. But the emotional hook? He’s doing it in honor of his late mentor Chubbs (played by Carl Weathers in the original film), whose legacy looms large over the sequel. Returning alongside Sandler is Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, and Christopher McDonald, once again channeling the smug intensity of arch-nemesis Shooter McGavin. But this time, the field includes actual PGA icons like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Bryson DeChambeau, all appearing as themselves and giving the film a semi-meta edge.

The new Happy Gilmore doesn’t just rely on nostalgia—it’s also poking fun at modern golf culture, social media hype, and the ongoing tension between traditional sports and entertainment spectacle. The tone remains distinctly Sandler: chaotic, self-aware, and prone to outbursts. But there’s also a sharper sense of reflection in the writing, with Happy confronting aging, legacy, and what it means to compete in a sport that never truly embraced him.

The announcement has sent social media into a frenzy, as the original 1996 film has long been one of Sandler’s most beloved roles. With Netflix investing heavily in Sandler’s comedy slate, Happy Gilmore 2 looks like the crown jewel of their summer lineup—a streaming-era crowd-pleaser that combines fan service with fresh faces and course-side cameos. Whether you’re in it for the nostalgia, the golf, or just to hear Sandler scream “You’re gonna die, clown!” one more time, this is the swing you won’t want to miss.
