Celine Song’s Highly-Anticipated Past Lives Follow-Up Hits Theaters in June

A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Materialists, the eagerly awaited sophomore feature from writer-director Celine Song. Following the immense critical and commercial success of Past Lives, Song returns with another deeply intimate and emotionally resonant story, this time exploring love, class, and identity through the lens of a contemporary New York City romance.

A Love Triangle Fraught with Desire and Status

Materialists follows Dakota Johnson as Lucy, a high-end matchmaker in Manhattan who has built a career on understanding love, chemistry, and compatibility. However, when she unexpectedly finds herself caught between two vastly different suitors, her own carefully cultivated theories on romance begin to crumble.

Pedro Pascal plays Randy, a charming, highly successful businessman who seemingly embodies everything Lucy has ever advised her clients to look for: wealth, confidence, and the ability to provide stability. On the other hand, Chris Evans portrays John, Lucy’s former love—passionate, familiar, but financially struggling. Their rekindled connection forces Lucy to question whether emotional history outweighs material security.

The trailer, scored by an evocative new song from Japanese Breakfast, masterfully juxtaposes Lucy’s glamorous, high-society matchmaking world with her deeply personal struggle. Meanwhile, comedic interjections from her clients, who set rigid and often absurd dating requirements—ranging from BMI restrictions to an aversion to cat lovers—serve as a biting critique of modern dating culture.

Between Fantasy and Reality: A Search for True Love

While Lucy's job is built around curating ideal romantic pairings for others, her own love life proves to be anything but straightforward. As she oscillates between the two men vying for her affection, her confidence in her matchmaking prowess begins to wane. Randy represents the fairytale she sells to her clients—a dream partner on paper. Yet it is John who delivers the most soul-stirring dialogue of the film, telling Lucy, "When I see your face, I see wrinkles and children that look like you. So where does that leave us?"

This line, emblematic of Song’s deeply introspective and poetic writing style, underscores the film’s central conflict: Is love about the comfort of the past or the promise of the future? The tension between material stability and emotional fulfillment is palpable throughout, elevating Materialists beyond a standard love story and into the realm of an incisive societal critique.

A Stellar Cast and the Mark of a Modern Auteur

Beyond its leading trio, Materialists boasts a compelling supporting cast that includes Zoë Winters, Dasha Nekrasova, Marin Ireland, and Louisa Jacobson. Song, who earned an Academy Award nomination for Past Lives, brings her signature sensitivity and keen observational prowess to this film, ensuring another profound cinematic experience.

With A24 behind the project, Materialists is primed not only for box office success but also as a serious awards contender. Song’s delicate storytelling, combined with her ability to extract deeply felt performances from her actors, suggests this film will be one of 2025’s defining releases. Fans of Past Lives can expect another emotionally layered journey when Materialists arrives in theaters on June 13.
