With the MCU’s next Spider-Man installment set for 2026, the addition of Stranger Things star Sadie Sink raises a major question: Is she Marvel’s new Mary Jane?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to welcome another major star, as Stranger Things breakout Sadie Sink has officially joined Spider-Man 4, starring opposite Tom Holland. While details on her role remain tightly under wraps, speculation is already running wild about what this casting could mean for the future of Peter Parker—and whether this signals the long-awaited arrival of a key Marvel character.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Spider-Man 4 is one of the most highly anticipated entries in the MCU’s next phase. Sony Pictures has slated the film for a July 31, 2026 release, with a script penned by Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, the writing duo behind Holland’s previous Spider-Man trilogy. The last installment, No Way Home, left Peter Parker completely erased from the memories of his closest friends, including MJ (Zendaya), setting the stage for a radically new chapter in his story.
While Marvel and Sony have not commented on Sink’s casting, one prevailing theory has immediately taken hold: Could she be playing Mary Jane Watson?
Is Marvel Introducing Its “Real” Mary Jane Watson?

The question of who exactly Zendaya’s Michelle Jones-Watson was meant to be has lingered ever since Spider-Man: Homecoming revealed her as “MJ.” Unlike previous versions of Mary Jane Watson, Zendaya’s MJ wasn’t a redhead, didn’t share the same name, and had a completely new backstory. Though her initials aligned with Mary Jane’s iconic moniker, Marvel Studios never explicitly confirmed her as the definitive MJ of the MCU.
Now, with Spider-Man 4 poised to take Peter Parker in a new direction, the introduction of Sadie Sink raises the possibility that Marvel is course-correcting by finally bringing in a “true” version of Mary Jane Watson. Given Sink’s striking red hair and her reputation for playing emotionally charged roles, she seems like a natural fit for Peter Parker’s iconic love interest.
Of course, that possibility opens another major dilemma: Where does Zendaya’s MJ fit into the picture? At the end of No Way Home, she had no memory of her romance with Peter, leaving the door open for new romantic entanglements. If Sink is indeed playing Mary Jane, Spider-Man 4 could be setting up a love triangle—or even rewriting the rules of Peter’s relationships altogether.

The Jean Grey Theory—Or a Misdirection?
Formerly 2oth Century Fox now Disney
One alternative theory floating around is that Sink might be portraying Jean Grey, the legendary telepathic mutant from the X-Men. While Marvel has confirmed that the X-Men will be introduced in its upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, there’s little precedent for the character debuting in a Spider-Man movie. Given that Spider-Man 4 is set before the major X-Men crossover, this theory feels far-fetched—especially when Sink’s physical resemblance and star power seem tailor-made for Mary Jane.

Regardless of her exact role, Sink’s casting signals a major shake-up for the Spider-Man franchise. With Jon Watts, who directed all three of Holland’s previous Spider-Man films, stepping aside, Spider-Man 4 marks a fresh start under Destin Daniel Cretton’s direction. Holland himself has teased that the next chapter is “different from anything we’ve done before,” hinting at a tonal and narrative shift that could redefine the character’s MCU future.
As Peter Parker navigates a world that no longer remembers him, will Spider-Man 4 introduce a brand-new love interest, rekindle lost connections, or push him into uncharted territory? With Sink’s addition, the possibilities just became even more intriguing.
The countdown to July 31, 2026, begins now.
