Ryan Gosling goes cosmic and cracked in a high-concept survival epic that feels like Lord and Miller’s boldest swing yet.

Ryan Gosling is having one hell of a space era. Months before he blasts off in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, the actor stars in what might be 2026’s first true event movie: Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Project Hail Mary, adapted from Andy Weir’s bestselling novel and guided by The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard.

Amazon MGM released a new trailer today, and it’s immediately clear this is Lord and Miller operating at their most ambitious — a grounded sci-fi survival story built around Gosling’s character, Ryland Grace, who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is, how he got there, or what he’s supposed to do. As pieces of his identity return, he discovers he’s the last-ditch hope for a dying Earth and the only person who can identify and neutralize the cosmic threat killing our sun.

The new footage highlights the film’s tonal balance — humor in the face of dread, loneliness edged with discovery — and introduces the supporting cast: Sandra Hüller, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce and James Ortiz. Fans of the book will notice the early hints of Grace’s unexpected companion, one of the novel’s most beloved elements.

Between The Mandalorian and Grogu, Spielberg’s untitled UFO odyssey, and now Project Hail Mary, sci-fi is heading for a stacked 2026 slate, but Lord and Miller are bringing a different flavor — emotional, character-driven, but with their unmistakable pop energy.

And for anyone who can’t get enough of Gosling in orbit, he’ll be back among the stars the very next year with Starfighter, marking a rare back-to-back intergalactic run for an A-list actor.

Project Hail Mary, released by Amazon MGM Studios, opens in theaters March 20, 2026.
