Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd Tackle a Mythical Creature in A24’s Death of a Unicorn
A24 has unveiled the trailer for its upcoming feature, Death of a Unicorn, a darkly comedic fantasy starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd. Directed by Alex Scharfman, the film is set to hit theaters in spring 2025, boasting a star-studded cast that includes Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, Richard E. Grant, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, and Jessica Hynes. Ari Aster, known for Hereditary and Midsommar, serves as an executive producer, adding his signature touch to the production.
The plot revolves around a father (Rudd) and his daughter (Ortega) who, during a weekend getaway with his billionaire boss (Grant), accidentally hit a unicorn with their car. As the group grapples with the surreal discovery, they realize the unicorn possesses miraculous abilities, including the rumored power to cure cancer. This revelation sparks a moral and existential dilemma, as greed, ethics, and familial bonds collide in what promises to be a genre-bending narrative.
In the trailer, Ortega’s character is the voice of reason amidst the chaos, warning, “Dad, please just listen to me. We need to give the little one back, OK? Bad things will happen.” Meanwhile, Poulter delivers a moment of comedic absurdity upon learning of the unicorn’s abilities, exclaiming, “Cancer? That’s the biggest one.”
Scharfman, making his feature-length directorial debut, is no stranger to crafting tense, character-driven narratives. His producing work includes Amazon’s horror film House of Spoils, starring Ariana DeBose. For Death of a Unicorn, he teams up with an impressive roster of producers, including Tyler Campellone, Tim Headington, and Lars Knudsen, alongside executive producers Ortega, Rudd, and Aster.
Ortega, fresh off her role in Wednesday Season 2 and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, continues to solidify her status as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars. Rudd, beloved for his versatility, recently appeared in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and the Marvel blockbuster Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
With its mix of dark humor, high-concept fantasy, and a formidable cast, Death of a Unicorn is poised to be another critical and commercial success for A24, continuing the studio’s streak of thought-provoking, genre-defying films.
