David Lynch to Posthumously Receive Writers Guild West’s Screenwriting Achievement Award

will present the honor at the annual WGA Awards on Feb. 15.

David Lynch, the visionary filmmaker behind Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and Mulholland Drive, has been named the recipient of the Writers Guild of America West’s 2025 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement. The WGA announced the honor on Wednesday, revealing that Lynch accepted the award in late 2024, just weeks before his passing on January 16, 2025.



The award will be presented at the 77th annual WGA Awards on February 15 by longtime Lynch collaborator Kyle MacLachlan, who starred in Twin Peaks, Dune, and Blue Velvet. WGAW President Meredith Stiehm praised Lynch’s unparalleled contributions to the craft, stating, “Writer-director David Lynch’s uncompromising vision pushed the boundaries of filmmaking. We are proud to honor him and his legacy.”

The Laurel Award recognizes WGA members whose work has profoundly influenced the art of screenwriting. Lynch joins an esteemed list of past recipients, including Walter Hill, Charlie Kaufman, Nancy Meyers, James L. Brooks, and Oliver Stone.
