Eyeing Post ‘Queer’ Reteam
Following their success with Queer, acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and actor Daniel Craig are reportedly eyeing another collaboration—this time for Sgt. Rock at DC Studios. The film, set to be directed by Guadagnino, will mark his next big project before he tackles the American Psycho reboot. According to sources, the screenplay for Sgt. Rock, written by Justin Kuritzkes, who also penned Queer, is in excellent shape, indicating that the project is nearing the go-ahead stage.
The collaboration is yet to be finalized, with no deals currently signed between DC Studios, Craig, and Guadagnino. However, this would be another significant addition to DC's upcoming slate, which includes the Superman film kicking off the new DC's "Gods and Monsters" Phase One, a Supergirl movie, and the animated series Creature Commandos, debuting on Max on December 5.
Details of the script remain under wraps, and it’s not yet known which specific storyline from the Sgt. Rock comics will be adapted. The character of Sgt. Franklin John Rock, created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, first appeared in DC's 1959 issue of Our Army at War as a World War II soldier serving in the infantry. Sgt. Rock became even more popular when he received his own comic book series in 1977, which ran until July 1988. Known for his ability to take down German planes with just a submachine gun, toss grenades with great precision, and be a fearless street fighter, Sgt. Rock is a compelling character to bring to the big screen.
Luca Guadagnino’s Queer opens in limited release on November 27, following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The film has been well-received, currently sitting at 78% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Daniel Craig stars in the adaptation of the 1985 novella by William S. Burroughs, portraying the author's surreal, romantic experiences in 1950s Mexico. Queer is Guadagnino's second movie of the year, following his hit tennis-world romantic drama Challengers, which starred Zendaya and grossed nearly $100 million globally.
Daniel Craig, best known for his role as James Bond, has been recognized for his work in Queer, with a nomination for Best European Actor at the European Film Awards. Guadagnino, meanwhile, is currently in post-production on Amazon MGM Studios' After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts. The director is represented by CAA, Range Media Partners, and Goodman Genow Schenkman, while Craig is represented by CAA, Independent Talent Group, and Glaser Weil Fink.
As of now, DC Studios has not commented on the potential project.
